they have 14 days to contact you, usually by letter, if the date on the letter is dated 14 days after the incident date stated in the letter (yes this happens unbelieveably) then you can contact them asking them to drop the charges as they were too slow (in a few more words of course)

If however you do receive a letter then depending on how fast you were going, or how far over the speed limit you were i should say, it will state what form of penalty they intend to dish out, normally is you were just over the limit it is 3 points and a £60 fine, if your lucky in some counties they may offer you a speed awareness course which is the nice way of slapping you on the wrist.

The initial letter will also ask you to confirm that you were the driver on that particular day and time, you confirm this by sending back the form filled in and signed, in doing this you in effect accept the penalty that they have outlined so if in any doubt it may be worth seeking advice before making any contact, but dont leave it too long as they can take proceedings further if they dont hear anything from you

If you fancied chancing your arm, you could say your friend visiting from abroad was driving and he's now gone back to.......... and give them an address.

Not done it myself but I know its worked before.

I thought I got caught by a policeman holding one of those gun things - I was going too fast and a NIP was assured. Didn't hear anything about it.

the reply i got was they asked for his passport details,,flight number, times and proof he was insured to drive that vehicle at that time!!!
after this one i waited for a reminder and sent it back as i was driving
lucky to get away with not being done for fraud if you ask me

I can believe they would get funny about it but in all honestly I've seen someone do it once and they never got a reply or the NIP. Personally I wouldn't.
