Question

Allright guys,
I'm a noob here so I hope this hasnt been posted to death!
What is the standard spec for a MY94 STi? Mine has HKS dump
valve, sti brake pipes, no abs, hks cone filter, sti exhaust,
and extremely short-shift gearbox. Is this what should be on
an authentic STi or is it just a fannied up wrx?

Ps Brakes are almost on way out as well, what is your recommended
after market uprated disk/pad combo.

Cheers

Sounds like its a type RA, if you check out www.sidc.co.uk and look under the FAQ's they have all the chassis numbers to tell you what type of car (model) it will be.
Other than that, what colour is the top of your engine? if its red/pink then its an STI.

Apart from the fact that early Stis did not have the red manifold. Check the SIDC link, as the chassis number is the only way to be certain.

Easiest way to see if its a type RA is if you cant hit 60mph in 2nd, shows its a type RA and type RA's are STI's so problem solved

Early RAs were not infact STis.

My 93 RA did however have a red manifold as standard original equipment.

You are correct in thinking it is not an RA due to the electrics.

STi is approx 21mph in 5th at 1000rpm.

RA is approx 19mph in 5th at 1000rpm.

No, no stop confusing the guy.

You can get Sti and WRX Type RAs.

RAs can have leccy windows etc as options.

Early Stis did not have red manifolds as standard.

If its an RA it will have the short gear ratios and an adjustable centre differential.

All IIRC of course

'You can get Sti and WRX Type RAs.'

Not the early ones. STi RAs were not around until very late 94/early 95. Until that they were RAs only.

'RAs can have leccy windows etc as options.'

The one in question here is an early one (although chassis numbers have proved it to be an STi - not an RA) so electric windows are out of the question.

'Early Stis did not have red manifolds as standard.'

Maybe not but some 93 RAs (not STi) did.

'If its an RA it will have the short gear ratios and an adjustable centre differential.'

Centre diff was not fitted until 95-96 model year for the RA and then on the STi RA.

Thnx for the info guys,

I'm pretty sure it is an STi judging by the model code.
Dont want to keep on about this thread but does anyone
know what or how to decifer the option code that is
after the model code?

Cheers

Trying to find it for you now.

I think the BJ relates to the colour and the interior specification (trim).

LOL

If it is 60, then I dont need anymore mods cos therefore I'm already hitting 60 in about 4 seconds, and I dont really think I am!!!

I'll check the 5th gear thing over the weekend. Maybe worth recalibrating though. Cheers

Dougie, I have a MY95 Sti, Inlet manifold isnt red on mine (i think the earlys are just modified WRX's as previously said), S.Shift, Sti mark on the Speedo, Sti strut brace etc.. Aside from the badges etc... think mine is pretty much as a standard WRX aside from suspension and other things previously mentioned!
Would love to know more about them though so if anyone does know some further details about the early models (apart from the SIDC info!) please post it here! - thanks guys - Folder
PS Dougie - Gonna go to the Bolnet Jap car meet - i'd like to have a look at your car to see if there are and differences. Cheers

I have a MY95/96 STiII. Manifold is red. Not for long though. Got a standard manifold which I am going to reverse the plenum on (front mount).

Dosen, Bolney is near Horsham in Sussex - (more details can be found on the Southern Meets section, apparently about 70 odd Scoobys may be making it down there. Ill be heading down there Via Tonbrige wells, meeting up with one other the other posters who knows the area better than me. Going from Plumstead/Welling drop me a mail if you want to meet up.

Folder,
'fraid I won't be at that meet as I am up in Scotland,
(bit of a distance to travel).
Regards the car, according to the links the guys gave me
at the start of the thread it seems the early STi's were
actually wrx's that STi modded themselves. The later ones
are actually built on the line as STi's.
I am the same as you, dont have a red manifold, but I dont
have STi on my speedo, altho' speedo has been convereted to
mph for import. There are no badges on my car that signify
it is an STi but there is a small(3") sticker on boot that
says "Tuned by STi" and two stickers on front doors o/s
and n/s that say "Hand Crafted Tuning By Subaru Technica"
with the Sti logo at the end. But I have the red stars badge
on the front. As for the mods do you have the d/valve and cone
filter as well? I take it from this these are the standard mods
for these STi's.

Btw thanks for the great response on this. Like I said earlier
3 years with this car, knew nothing about it, apart from it being
quick , 3 days on Scoobynet and im an expert. I'll be taking it
to bits and puting it back together in no time

Dougie

Dougie, Cone filter and HKS dump valve are deffo aftermarket items on your car. I also have the same WRX tuned by sti sticker on boot as well as STI wing badges and pink stars badge on grill. Would love to know more about the internals and other standard modifications on the earlier models - if i can locate any further info i'll let you know.

Forged pistons.

Shot penned running gear. Lower ratios. Engine blueprinted supposedly.

Slightly higher boost.

Still fitted with hydraulic lifters on the earlier models hence the still low rev limit (as opposed to the 8k on the later solid lifter models). I have just fitted solid lifters to get around this (with Link ECU).

Cheers Foldertronics would be interested myself.

Wonder if it is possible to get in touch with STi in japan?,
they must have an order/ref for each early cars spec that
they built. As you say the internals are an interesting one
as there are blueprinted engines etc.
Regards the boot emblems, there is no wrx or subaru emblems
on it.

Dougie.

Since the car has been around for almost 10 years there is a good chance someone has removed stickers. Like the large obscene WRX sticker across the boot.

What is your intercooler (just out of interest). Silver or black. Not sure when they changed to these.

The very first STIs were just tweaked WRX's. Best to check the model code so you know what you have got.

[The air con and electrics are on some RA's as they were on the options list and could be specified. ]

No a quote, but I'm sure mine isn't an RA but I can get 65 in Second and thats just short of the 8k redline ! Wonder what my car actually is then... Could that be due to the exhaust, PPP, and quick shift high ratio Gear box !!
