I had problems with the connectors inside the monitor, tend to loosen from vibrations in the car over time

this results in everything from space invaders, japanese readings to all sorts of garble and a shutdown or two

take it a part and check soldering and connectors

So is it a PSI3 you have? Or are you talking about the Subaru Select monitor?
If its a PS!3, as Reggie mentioned, the connections can come loose. But if it says good bye, you can sometimes just press enter or exit to get it back up again.
