Its not so easy to put an sti box in as the diff ratios are different, Its worth spending the extra money and finding an MY03 WRX box with a ty7545aa code, These are much stonger than the classic box, Oh, and it will bolt straight in,

I've just picked up that same gearbox for £550

You know the old saying. If it's not broke...

Saying that in the mean time you could just keep an eye out for a box and diff combo? Cause like t7srt says you will need a matching diff too.
What mods have you got and what power?

Have you changed the oil in your box () recently? What did the old oil look like?

running 285bhp

gear box dont feel very 'willing' and generally a bit clunky

are they easy to change?

so the 03 wrx box will bolt right on with current diff?

I can't vouch for the 03 box but clunky? Are you sure it's the box?
Changing them is easy if you have a decent jack and a pair of axle stands. Just take your time if you have not done it before and take lots of pics. I am assuming you are handy with the spanners here, yes?

TBH the box you have should be able to handle 285bhp I think they are good for 350? (don't quote me on that though). Have you changed the oil in the box and diff then?

I've been running over 300bhp on the MY99 Uk box and its been fine, Only now that I'm at 350bhp the diff bearings have some play in, Have adjusted them but wont take long to go again, Before it goes completely I'll be replacing with the 03 wrx, then I'll have a spare when that one goes and i cant afford a 6 speed, lol
My current gearbox has done 130k with numerous trackdays,
Others have killed a box with less power and miles,

Agree with Chris, should be fine with 285bhp

The wrx 03 box has the same front diff as ours but built a little stronger with a longer 3rd gear,
