Its a bit of a no brainer really, JDM.
Pro's for the JDM, everything
Con's (if you can call it that, no new age JDM owner would though ) no burble and shorter service intervals (as per the classics, 6 month/7,5k)

Ensure you carry out all the relevant checks though, hpi, inspection etc

Only downsides to JDM would be, may need remapping for uk fuel and slightly higher insurance premiums and less companies will insure you and it can be a pain for parts.

JDM IMO. It can easily be tweaked to approx 350bhp plus with 370 ft-lb torque plus on the std twin scroll turbo. Can be done for approx £1k or half that if it already has a 3" uprated exhaust already.

If you want to go higher upto 400bhp then the twin scroll can be modded/hybridised (I like that word!!) up to that level. (with appropriate fueling mods) Very soon you will probably be able to drop in a 450 bhp twin scroll upgrade turbo too.

But if you want to modify the engine considerably e.g. 450 bhp plus:

Then you may be better off with the UK 2.5 litre block thats gona have to get rebuilt & uprated anyway at those power levels & it would be a waste ditching the twin scroll setup for a big (non twin scroll) turbo which you would probably do.

Bit of a myth really IMO

Most on sale will already be mapped for UK fuel or can be easily remaped or flashed with basic fuel map very quickly, there are loads of specialists out there doing JDM insurances at the same price but if slightly more thats probably because they know the JDM's are faster out of the box, parts are almost all the same as UK cars, though some may not be as you say

Also if your lookin 03-04 JDM will have DCCD and UK car won't.
Then your much more likely to find a UK car with Full subaru service history, and alot of them with PPP upgrade, bringing them to same BHP as JDM.
Also if your worried about economy the UK car may be a better bet (dont quote me) on motorway runs as it has a taller 5th an 6th gear than JDM cars.

Default is it worth it??

Are the twin scroll turbos stronger than the STI UK TYPE turbos.
If so is it worth spending the extra money on insurance to get a more reliable turbo.:won der:

Not more reliable just quicker spooling, no lag.

Do a search under JDM differences, its not just about the twin scroll.......stronger engine internals; quick steering rack; etc

JDM's are far better specc'd than their uk counterparts as Rick has said, lag is virtually none existent with the twin scroll set up its a wonderful car, better in many ways over the uk versions, shorter gearing in 5th and 6th though, means the car wont hit 170mph (if you get that high up )

There isnt much in it tbh, JDM's ratio to 167mph@8k, UK cars to 184mph@8k, its probably 4-500 rpm, BUT the JDM's are much nicer to drive

Just lookin at the Ridiculous Irish tax system.

Vehicle reg tax on a 05 sti type uk is 10300 euro, on a JDM 05 sti same mileage its 8300.

Just think about that for us poor irish guys.
You pay roughly 10k for an 05 sti, change to euro is about 11300, then add another 8-10k, means an 05 one costs us about 21-23k euro :-(

Then we pay about 15-20p a litre less for petrol than you, not long adding up in a scooby!

4500rpm at 70mph? Thats pretty high is it not? Is it not a pain to live with on longer motorway drives?

Didnt realise the JDM dont have the burble Is there any kind of burble or is it totally gone?
Im in the same boat as the OP

They still have a little bit of a burble on idle but as soon as you rev it it goes. They have a slightly higher 8k redline too. They sound great imo. Here is what mine sounds like going past.

Thats news to me, I thought it was only the v8 onwards that had equal length headers. I thought the v7 had unequal and still retained the burble?

think he meant 400rpm to 500rph higher than a uk car so

my UK STI sits around 2700rpm at 70mph
the JDM would be around 3100rpm to 3200rpm at 70mph (which is around the same as my uk car in 5th gear at 70mph)

I have the JDM 6 speed from a v7 & its at 3k @ 70mph - bit of a pain in the **** on a long journey, but not soul destroying as long as you have a quiet exhaust, IMHO

Well you have your opinion and all the JDM "hardcore" owners have theirs
(plus we all know that the JDM cars are better than their UK counterparts )
