Default 9yrs+ £2000 incentive!

Is it me or has this scheme not been thought through very well?
If your car is over 9yrs old you can get a 2 grand "scrapping" incentive if you buy a new or nearly new, more fuel efficient car. Sounds good? Trouble is, how many people with a 9yrs+ car can afford a new or nearly new car, even with £2000 to help them? The main reason they have an "old" car in the first place, is that they can't afford a newer one!
The other half drives a '98 Primera (superbly reliable, well made car) whose value is well below 2G but a newer car could set her back, say £12,000 There is no way she can find £10,000!
Certainly, the "nearly new" aspect needs clarification?

Who's up for buying an electric car and getting £5,000 towards it?

old bangers will go up in price as people will buy one just to trade in. As you say they'd need to sort some gov backed finance agreements. As we own the banks now that shouldn't be too hard to do

Yup, another well thought out idea, almost a good one

I suspect the £2k will be off the list price, about the level of discount you could negotiate anyway.

Particularly as you could go out and buyer a banger for £250 and save £1750 so I guess you are right.

Sounds like now could be quite a good time to go out and buy as many <2k old bangers as you can - wait for the subsidy to kick in, then sell them to people who are about to buy themselves a new car for £1900 each. Everybody wins!

(unless you've ever paid any tax in your life, of course...)
