If you think insurance is a problem wait until you see how much fuel they drink!!!
Your stupid for not finding insurance before getting the car, with 6 points, 2 yrs driving/NCB and at 22 i doubt that anyone will insure you. I dont even think Rum* will be able to help you as your under 25. Dont be silly and buy an impreza thinking that its not going to cost you money for it is, if your looking at how much, here is what i pay. Male, 32, full no claims, protected, no points, 4 accidents, 2 fault 2 non fault, 980 pounds, plus an extra 26 for my alloys, 350 excess and i whinge at that!!! your going to be looking at 3 to 4 times that much, points mean more to some companies than accidents do and i loose 2 of them come renewal time! as for fuel, hmmmm motorway driving, 1000 miles per month, 200 quid, you think you can afford that?? 500miles in town will set you back the same!!
Depending if you get an import or uk car, jap imports NEED super unleaded!! uk cars dont.
Servicing, 6 months or 7.5k, varies from 90 quid to 450 quid, depends on mileage/age of the car, 30k service is approx 300 quid, 45 is 400 - 450 quid, if you think you can afford it, which i doubt, then buy it. These are Very expensive cars to run, you wont be able to afford one unless you earn really big money!! (min 18k plus per year basic)
If you havnt done your homework then your going to suffer!!!

Tony

Scrappy,

My renewal is due in 2 weeks and I've been looking around, I was with AXA(used to be Guardian Direct) they wanted £1702.20 to insure myself & girlfriend on my Impreza.
O.k. I've got 6 points & 2 years NCB, I got a quote of "www.privilege.com" for £1146.60 which I thought was much better.
I also received a quote from "www.greenlight-insurance.com" for £965.00...

Try the above and if you get a good quote buy me a beer..

Neil

Tony, You sound just like my dad... If the lad wants a Scooby let him feel the impact on his wallet. Worth every penny I say matey

Pete, 18k was only a guideline, i think that its probably the minimum that anyone can afford to run a scoob on (know someone who does!) of course that excludes ot!! then again i do earn quite a bit more than 18k!! plus alot of o/t for night work.
But if people dont look into what they buy then they deserve all they get when they have to leave the car on the path because they cant afford to run it!!

Neil, there is a difference between "owning" a car and "running" a car, anyone can "own" a car, not everyone can "run" a car!!
Having one sit there rotting is a waste of machinery, it was built for fun, not to rust, if you think i sound like your dad then your dad has some sense!! i dont think i am going to be alone in this when i say "cant run it, dont buy it!!"

I did my homework before i bought my scoob, checked out the insurance before hand, checked out service costs, wear and tear parts like tyres, did the lot, i know that i can quite comfortably run my car, if something goes wrong then i can afford to get it sorted, can you??

Scrappy,

I'm 22, with 3yrs NCB, but no points or accidents ever!(dont know how )
Last year i paid £1400 for my 93 WRX
Try calling Christian Wheatley at Keith Michaels(0208 288 0677). They're good with imports.
Ive also got my new scoob before i got any insurance quotes, and i think this is the best way, otherwise i probably wouldn't own it now!!!

P.s Rum* couldn't help me because of my age, even when i tried to get on the P1 scheme

Phil.
(looking to insure a 97 STI3 typeR(sonic blue) after my birthday, later this month )

Scrappy,
I was 23 with 1yr NCB when I got the RB5, ADMIRAL were the only company that I could afford. At least in Mainland UK there are some companies willing to specialise in perfomance cars/ young drivers, in NI there are a limited numbers of companies and the number is going down, plus we pay higher premiums anyway.
Hope you get sorted,
Andy

I can't believe you didn't check the insurance.

I have wanted an Impreza for the last 3 years but I knew that while I could afford to buy the car I knew that the insurance would kill me. So I bought an MX-5 (no power but wonderful handling) and I have built up a full protected NCB with no points and no claims. I turned 25 a couple of months ago and I've just ordered my WRX MY01 last month. But to cover future servicing and rising insurance costs I decided to import and save £3000.

The lowest quote I've had for insurance is £950 with £400 excess (www.elephant.co.uk) which is still very expensive but at least it's affordable. The lowest quote I had before I was 25 was £4000 and that's with a completely clean licence and 4 years NCB.

If your under 25 you can't buy any car without first checking the insurance.

The penny has dropped.

You're being charged through your nose for being a student, as well as having points,, young and not much NCB. As a student you are seen by the insurance community as utterly irresponsible. My girlfriend and I bought our first flat while in our 3rd year at uni (mortgage guaranteed by her dad), but couldn't get contents insurance for it because we were students. Why can't you wait until you graduate?

P.S. Why didn't I do a Forensic Science degree....

What ever you do avoid OPI, they are the most incompetent bunch of chimps I’ve ever had the misfortune to come across.
Through their mismanagement and unprofessional attitude I was left uninsured without me knowing.

As the old saying goes "you pay peanuts you get monkeys"

So avoid at all costs

I'd look at the motor trader insuranec, as has already been mentioned. A friend on the right side of the pennines uses this. Pays trade value, and there's an excess of 10% of the value of the car on his policy, but he can drive *ANY* car fully comprehensively.

Get a copy of Auto Trader and look for specialist insurers for the motor trade in there.

Good luck, and enjoy the experience. Just try to budget for the expensive bits, like tyres, etc... Buying a new house, I'm having to do just this, trying to put 100 quid a month into a scooby fund.

£30K straight out of uni - get real! more like £20-25K.

Mine cost me over 600 a month in loan, insurance and petrol - that excludes servicing and mods ( ).

they're not cheap - you should have done a little investigation first!

Question

Scrappydoo

Am I missing something here? let me get this right, you're at Uni, you've not started your job (that you haven't got yet) but you can afford a new scooby.

RU being sponsor'd? or have you got a trust fund or something?

Not being nosey but I just want to know where I went wrong.....

Scrappy,

Im 22 no points 3 years NCB 96my turbo, £960
with Privelege. (just over a grand now with mods)

However, if its brand new you may be in trouble and as Tony says they drink petrol like you would not believe. Plough through the insurance archive section and see if there is anything there.

Otherwise just buy a nova ike everyone else!

Question

Scrappy

I had the same idea as you when I left uni 5 years ago - I thought here we go, 20k a year straight up - I had a business degree as well which you can apply to any job. How wrong I was.

For the first 2 years I was earning 10k a year.

Sounds like your dad has a few bob to me - after 5 years working I finally have a well paid job, but I still cant afford a new car. Fair enough I have my own house, but if I was you I would be prepared to have to sell it after a few months.

Hope we haven't put you off!!!!

Tony,

I went out to buy a lottery ticket one Saturday and I returned home 2 hours later with a ticket & the receipt for the purchase of a Subaru.
I'm saying that anyone should do their homework and look around at costs etc. I considered a Skyline but after owning a modified 300zx I knew what the running costs were.
A Subaru in my mind is a much better car to run and maintain as long as you look after it and know where to get good service.

I think I can afford to run it on £56k p.a., but it's all about how much you want one and what else you can do without.

HI Neil,
The point i was trying to make is that most people on here do earn more than 25k p.a, i definately do, 30k plus 12k bonus or if i go contracting 75k+, but im not a money grabbing git well not yet anyway lol!
The point i am trying to make is that you just cannot go out and buy a car, which by all standards can be more than a handful on the road, something that people dont look into, i was lucky as ive owned a few pug gti's in my life so i know what "lift off oversteer" is and to be honest with you i find the subaru to be the twitchiest of the lot!!
The one thing the impreza isnt, is cheap to run, and its not a car that you can put an inexperienced driver in and expect them to handle the power, im still lucky as i have the company van, which is very forgiving, unlike the scoob! and that gives me the best of both worlds reality AND fun
But what i would never do is go and buy a scoob without looking at the cost of running her, also not having a job and relying on getting one straight from uni.
I enjoy my car for what she is, an impreza turbo, i treat her well, 5w40 fully synth oil, 30 secs to warm up before driving, turbo timer to run her down, she gets pampered! just need a visit from wax wizard now lol!
I remember the first "hot hatch" i bought, i was 23, just about afford the running costs of it (ren 19 16v) and the good thing that helped me afford it was this nice 30k/3yr all parts paid for warranty i still had to pay for the servicing (which i checked out beforehand)and i wasnt too bothered about that
I was budgeted but i could afford it, and very nice it was too
But you cannot go and buy a car without checking the running costs!!!

Scrappy....

You could always get a traders policy but on the understanding that you would get trade value for the car. It's not all doom and gloom tho, a traders policy also means you can drive any car upto the value of the car, it is irrelevant what the car is.

Try giving a place called Academy a call, there is a guy called Simon Eagle there. Make it plain that you'll have the odd jap import 'in stock', i.e. impreza's, gti-r's etc etc.

I paid £1200 for mine and that was after having my license 18 months, no ncb and no accidents etc.

Hope that helps,
ta,
Matt.
