Depends what you're after. I was looking around for a v5/6 myself and pretty much gave up trying to find a decent, unmolested standard one - whereas they come up for auction in Japan quite regularly (see the Bonsai Cars web site, grade 4 cars are what you're really looking for). Personally I always feel it's worth paying a bit more to get the car you actually want, regardless of the objective market value.

im looking to get a low miles type r ltd as well from japan, going through bonsai, want a v5 i think even though will cost more due to the cost of the sva rather than just an mot. also there seems to be quite a lot of variation between grade 4 cars, grade 4 is meant to be excellent condition, however several grade 4's iv requested reports on are far from what i would call excellent, dents, waves, cig burns on interior etc, but some are very nice. i imported a v3 sti a year ago through a small business that is now no more, but the guy only picked the very best cars, told him wanted a minter with very low miles and we looked at a fair few that were grade 4 but he wasnt happy with them cause they werent up to the standard he or i was after, which was reassuring to me. finally when a grade 4 in white with 40k came up i got it and it was really in stunning condition, interior was as new really, couple of tiny little scuffs that touched up, was so happy with the car, dont think u get the same level of input or customer service with the bigger companys like bonsai cars, if u bid on a grade 4 with them they wouldnt not go ahead with it just because it wasnt quite up to scratch, reckon grade 4 is grade 4 to them, just mo of course from my experience so far, however yet to get a car so will hold judgement until i do.

I have been looking on Bonsai and I am a little unsure on their actual service. Is it that you fill out forms, they call you back (to confirm your interest) and they bid for you on that car. You win the car. Then what? Who arranges shipping/container and then sva when it is in the UK. How much extra is this on top of the price of the car at auction, say a £4k car. ?? I would like to know.
I know that a grade 4 car is not necessarily a grade 4. Could have as you say, damaged interior, head gasket blown, dents etc... I know the industry standard in the UK is 2m at 45 deg, so it is the same in Japan?
Hence I was going to pay a little extra and get SVA to get me a minter.

if u look on their website there is a faq tab which gives u the full breakdown of costs involved, they arrange for shipping mot etc etc and full cost breakdown, all this is included in whatever your total budget is, car is also fully inspected by qualified mechanic prior to any bids being made. u also get a report on any car u fancy before u bid and speak to an advisor who goes through the report with u and what the expected cost of the car will be roughly.

Just read it. All seems straight forward I think.
