remap - do it yourself?

remap - do it yourself?
Thinking about upping the power on my scooby, but not really looking to spend too much or get too much - I guess it's credit crunch for all of us. But, I am looking to get to around 260/270ish and it seems like the best route is a few mods and then a remap.
Could anyone recommend someone good in the west midlands, and also, there seem to be numerous adverts for remaps that can be done from your own laptop with the correct software, etc. Does anyone know anymore about this?
Thanks

The car really needs to go on a set of rollers to set it up properly, personally I think you really need to know what your doing altering settings with the laptop. You could quite easily knacker your engine if boost/fueling mixture/timing is incorrect.
