I was hoping to pick my new car up tomorrow but it looks unlikely that my new insurance certificate won't arrive in time to be able to tax the car. Now in the past when I've bought cars and this has happened the dealer has still been able to go and tax it using their motor trade licence or something. However the dealer I'm buying this car from says there's no way he can tax my car without my insurance docs. Can anyone shed any light on it? Is there any way I can tax it? I thought about doing it online but won't get the disc through for a few days and so could get fined for failure to display it :-/

if you purchase it on line, print out reciept at the end, IF a cop car looks you up it will show that you have road tax, and if he pulls you over youll have the print out to prove it, Its happend to me before,

 

Can you not get hold of a fax of the certificate??

People told me you couldnt tax using a fax but I have done it 3 times in the past when buying a new car.

Guess it depends how friendly your post office are.

The print out receipt idea is OK unless one of those damn DVLA cameras gets you :-/ Think it's an £80 fine for failure to display a tax disc :-/

As for the fax idea, some post offices will accept it, some won't :-/

 

If you purchase Tax online then your number plate will go into a database, If you get pulled this will show on PNC and you can explain it has not turned up yet.
They can see the vehicle is tax, and likewise if the vehicle is untaxed, if it is shown as tax yo will get a grace period for the disc to arrive.

 

if he taxes the car online it will go to the address listed with the dvla if the car is registered with the garage it will go there if not whats the address of the last owner.

 

Yep that's true plus although you are taxed they can actually fine you for failure to display the disc

Got my reminder the other day and there, as always, was a leaflet with it.

"Since 1st September 2008, you can legally drive or keep your vehicle on the road for upto five days from the end of the month without displaying a valid tax disc provided you have made your application (by phone or online) before your current tax/SORN expires."

 

i had one taxed by a dealer just last month. it wasnt a problem for them to do it with there trade policy.

But if its on finace they normally ask for proof of insurance before you drive it away

 

Thanks for the info, but unfortunately it says 5 days from the end of the month, ie from teh end of one month till the 5th of the next. Unfortunately it won't fall into these days as it's the 21st tomorrow :-/
