Most Powerful UK Impreza?
#1
We all hear about big-power STi's and so forth but who's got the most powerful UK car and how?
Is it feasible for me to aim at 320 or so bhp from my RB5? (i.e. PPP, Front-Mount Intercooler, VF22 Turbo, Decat Exhaust, APS Induction, Apexi Fuel + Boost Controllers, Uprated Fuel Pump - would that do it?)

Well Andy started off with getting some decent engine management.
It's all very well getting boost, and fuel controllers, but what about an ignition controller too......
By the time you've finished, it's cheaper, and easier to just go out and buy a good ecu.
Then you can worry about sorting out a bigger turbo, FMIC, and the fuel system.
Mark.

Mattski,
agree with Mark - with all the mods you describe over 300bhp is possible - but you would need the ECU changed for a Link, Motec, Jems, Pectel.
Andy used a very big turbo - so on the road his car was quick but torque came in very late and his powerband was very narrow.
My peak torque is at 4000rpm and a useful powerband from 3500 to 8000 rpm, over 300bhp from 5500 to 8000 - you need a good ECU to that.

thanks for the replies chaps, if an ECU change is on the cards what do you recommend? APS in Australia recommend the Unichip piggyback stuff as is retains all of the cars 'driveability' characteristics whilst still upping power, your thoughts?

I thought my ears were burning!!
Standard MY99 engine, just add:
Big turbo (Power Enterprise PE1818)
Good ECU and mapping (Link mapped by Bob Rawle)
FMIC & associated bits (APS front mount intercooler and air inductor)
Exhaust (Scoobysport 2.5" downpipe & HKS Hiper Ti-Limited)
Standard injectors reached 100% duty cycle at 6,000rpm.
Planned modifications before having to sell the car:
Apexi 550cc injectors
Uprated fuel pump
Fuel regulator
Highest recorded figure on the rollers - 356bhp/298lbft of torque

Mattski2, I wouldn't personally use the Unichip it just doesn't seem to do what it set's out.
Mind you in saying that they do have a very good track record with the APS stuff.
I went Motec with mine and it had all the drivability of the standard car, and better fuel economy, and heaps of HP.
To give you some idea, my MY99 makes 250KW at the wheels, and still gets 450-500KM's to a tank of fuel.
T25 turbo 450 option, FMIC, bigger injectors, extractors, 3inch exhaust, STi cams. only run up to 19 psi.

thanks for the replies guys, Andy... top figures !
Whoosh, would be interested in learning more about your Motec, rough cost, who supplied and fitted it, any problems etc?
ta,
Matt

Matt, maybe a little hard, I'm in Australia, sorry mate.
But you guy's should be able to get Motec gear dirt cheap, the ECU cost me 3K AUD here, and there the most expensive in Aust.
but for the ability to tune down to the last little bit, there's nothing better.

Whoosh,
Have you got any more info on the T25/450bhp option. The biggest option I can find is 280bhp.
250KW/338bhp ATW's (circa 440bhp ATC)is pretty impressive from 19psi. Is your engine a 2.0lt, or bigger ? Can you let us have some more details about what else you've had to do, like internals, etc'.
Mark.

Sure not a prob,
the motor was 2L nothing major done to it, ie no head work etc, rebuilt with forged pistons, V5 STi cams, 880 Injectors, extractors, FMIC, Motec, T25, 3 inch exhaust, Pod filter, that's about it I think.
I'll go check the Turbo when I get home and see what numbers are on it, it's a BB so it spools up nice and quick, around the 2500-2700rpm, and still produces power up to the redline.
If you want here's a shot of the 99, http://www.playnow.com.au/promos/_marty/nissan/images/WRX4.jpg
and the dyno sheet, http://www.playnow.com.au/promos/_marty/nissan/images/REXDyno.jpg
Sorry there not a link don't know if I can do that here.

Whoosh,
The links don't work. Can you check them, I'd love to see the dyno graph.
Who mapped the Motec for you, or did you do it yourself.
Mark.

Mark, sorry mate you'll have to paste them into your browser, I couldn't get a link thingy to work so I just pasted the URL into the page.
No a company called Chiptorque did all the tuning, it spent days and days on the dyno to get it to were it was.

Mmmmm - that is an awful lot of power for a 2lt engine running 19PSI.
Quite simply where is the power coming from? Even with relatively large turbos, 19psi cars in the UK are struggling to get over 350bhp ATF figures, maximum 240bhp ATW.
What key element do you believe gives you the additional 100bhp that we are all missing?

The figures do look higher than you'd expect from a 2.0lt, running a T25 @ 19psi, but who knows .... It's also a well known fact that Aus' Roo's go much higher than UK Shetland ponies
Looking at the dyno graph, I assume that the Green figures refer to the car prior to any serious mod's, with maybe just an exhaust, and filter ? These would seem to make sense, IF the figures were ATF, because IIRC, 170KW = 230bhp (1KW=1.354bhp I think ?) about what you'd expect from a '99.
Something certainly doesn't seem to add up, but maybe Whoosh knows something we don't......
