Default Road Chewed Tyre

Moved away after lights on two lane road, I just about noticed a very big ditch in the road and could not avoid it so continued slowly, the left front tyre went through the ditch. At the next set of lights the steering felt very hard moving off so I came to a stop on a side road and noticed the trye was completely flat. I replaced with the space saver and then checked both sides of the rim, all seems ok. The tyre is flat but no gashes so seems like it got punctured through the ditch.
I will have the tyre repaired (still 4mm left) or replaced tomorrow.

Now, the question I would like to ask is - Can I complain to the local council and get them to pay for the tyre?

It's not cheap - 225/40/18 !!!!

What would you do?

Thanks,
Shailan

You can try, but so long as they can patch the tyre for a tenner is it worth it? Perhaps worth a disgruntled but polite letter as a starter if tyre needs replacing. I wouldn't get your hopes up though unless you can afford a £500 per day brief!

Tricky one mate. I guess it's down to proof. Get a picture of the ditch - as long as it's within the width of the road and inline with the track of a wheel then that's a starter for ten.

Whether you can claim from the council or not depends on various factors.

Has anyone reported the hole before.

If someone has, when did they report it?

When did the council last inspect the road?

Has the council instructed anyone to repair it?

If it was repaired, has it failed and do the questions above start all over again.

A huge pothole outside my son's house has wrecked tyres/wheels/suspension on a least 5 cars over the weekend. They all end up pulling into his gateway!

He reported it on Friday and it was repaired yesterday.

But today the repair has failed and two more cars were in his driveway tonight awaiting recovery.

The best thing to do is notify the council immediately - they usually have out of hours numbers for this as well.

Get the repairs done.

Then send a claim in to the council.

If it is refused, go on-line to make a small claim.

You may, or may not win, but at least you will have tried.

Thanks.

The tyre could not be repaired as it had sidewall damage. I had to get a new tyre - same as the other 3 dunlop sport max, 225/40/18 - cost £108 from bracknell tyres.

I have taken pictures of the hole in the road and have receipt for the tyre. Will contact them in the morning.
