Default type r

hi my name is nicky

i am thinking of getting a type r scooby as i was in 1 just as a passanger and i have never been in anything as quick in my life. i drive an e30 325i sport 1991 only 170bhp ish i think im gonna put her in the garage untill the summer.

im 24 and will have 1 years ncb next month i have been quoted £2150 tpft its alot but im prepared to pay it as i think scoobys are lethal.

my question is would i be able to get a good 1 for under 5k i see them for upwards of 7k but i couldnt stretch that far, i am afraid of buying 1 and it blowing up if any one has any helpful tips on what to look for it would be much appricieted

Welcome
Good ones go for over 5k for the early models, over 7k for the later, and you dont want to do tpft, you are just throwing your money away there you need fully comp on a scoob, if not then its not worth getting one because if you have an accident then your out of pocket and out of a car (plus in debt)
Also 1 years ncb isnt much, hence why your copping the 2150 quid insurance, and these are a 276bhp car, a little different to a BMW, both in performance and handling.

Type Rs are bloody quick as I've had one before. However, do you really want your insurance to be nerly 50% of the value of your car and that only as tpft? Personally, I would wait for a bit otherwise you will be forever paying out.

4ync makes all the difference.
Have you thought of starting with a uk2000 or wrx, then moving up to the type r later? Give you some time to learn good and bad points about them too.

normal sti is the same power but with the added convenience of 2 extra doors.
Maybe a fair bit cheaper to insure although I cant help but think your really pushing it and stretching everything to the limit to own one.

Can't fault your keeness, but what happens say if you need to rebuild the engine at £2 or 3k +? Not beyond the realms of possibility by any means.
What if you overcook the dccd, similarly, Im sorry to be the harbinger of bad news but its not out of the question.
No offence intended but buying and owning an impreza are two totally different things and yet ironically both cost a bloody bomb.

Still, if you must then go for it

thanks for all the quick replies

i have no problem paying big insurance im use to it living over here in northern ireland

when i was 19 i paid £2700 for a pug 306 d turbo (dirty diesal urgh never again) then £1950 for a saxo vtr

then i drove under my girlfriends name as i had a claim against me for the past few years insurance , and now im paying just over a grand on my bmw in my own name and all the time i have only been covered tpft,

i know when u buy a scooby it might be well looked after but with anything high performance it can blow up, there is a man who lives near me and he has a lovely classic 4 door sti he had it 2 weeks and the engine died, so i know what to expect, the car was not his first scooby he probably is a member on here and he told me it was to be expected

a subaru blowing up is all part of the experience and joys of owning one but if i dont get one now i will probably never get 1 as i will be hopefully building a house in the future

thanks for giving some good advice it looks like a pretty good site thanks once again

nicky

Does depend on how you look after them and drive them.

Drive it hard 24/7 and yes of course it will die, look after the car and normally they do look after you. Wouldn't fix your ideas on buying a car and just expecting it to blow up...seems pointless to be honest. Yes budget in repairs but don't always look at the worst thing that could happen.

If you get one, get it serviced and put on a RR and strapped up to some dyno equip, see how it runs...at least you'll know it's running ok or not before you spend money on bits and bobs

Welcome to scoobynet!

I loved my Type R

I had it for about 8 years.

I used to drive it hard, and it was incredibly reliable.

It developed a bit of piston slap which API put right, and early on it used to crunch a bit into 3rd...

But it was REALLY quick, and really reliable. Not cheap to run though, with insurance, fuel, etc.

Also, they are a real handful in the wet, unlike the vast majority of scoobies.

Have fun.

Nicky...I guessed you were an N.I man because you're driving a 325i sport (we all know what they're used for over here!! ) and due to the big insurance you're paying..lucky guess I suppose!

I have a gunmetal grey Type R since Xmas. It's an absolute lethal car even in standard form...all you needs an exhaust to get the scooby noise and you're grinning the whole way. What the guys on here are saying is right...the Type R is VERY tailhappy in the wet, even in 2nd and 3rd gear at times. Its the best of both worlds if you're a rear wheel drive man like myself due to the adjustable diff.

What part of N.I you from?

im from mayobridge between newry and warrenpoint where are you from yourself?

there isnt that many nice subarus around my part of the country, there is a few nice evo 7s but i think they arent in the same league as a subaru for noise.i bought the autotrader today just the one 98 type r in it, from belfast its going for 6k im gonna give him a ring tommorow as im working there at the minute.

it is a bit over my budget but he may take less you never know

its a type r v limted
no 76
taxed and mot
brand new 2.5 bottom half
apexi brain
roof vent

whats the differance in a 2.5 bottom end are they stonger?

No the 2.5 engine isnt actually stronger (same physical size as the 2ltr with more metal removed), but for upto around 450bhp they are pretty good, but they produce more torque than the single scroll 2ltr engines, which is a plus and a minus, more torque = more drivability, more torque = more strain on an already hard done by 5 speed gearbox.

I'm from the opposite end of the province mate lol...Limavady up near Coleraine.
If you're wanting a run in a Type R then let me know as it may just convince you to go for it.

Personally I couldn't find a decent one in NI so I headed to England and brought one home. 400 miles later a rattle developed in the bottom end. I was lucky as I'd bought it off a dealer who forked out £1400 for the rebuild.

I'm sure there are good ones out there but just beware of anything thats been difffed-they dont stand diffing at all mate.

Let us know how you get on with the car.

google it and you'll get lots of clips on youtube, and no i dont think the impreza is best suited to it unless you want to keep on fixing it

This is diffing lol:

YouTube - Bills saturday diff

And in Northern Ireland we are usually subjected to 'diffing' from these old machines as well

YouTube - 3 Twin Cams

"Diffing" is a highly skilled pass time practiced the length and breadth of Ireland. Not only do you need years of dedication and practice to perform this form of motorsport but ***** of steel are required too!!

On a more serious note....these guys turn up at any gathering of cars or even just a deserted country T-junction and provide the entertainment and have been doing so for about 20 years lol!

99% of its down in "Twin Cams" (AE86 Corrolla GT Coupe) and its standard procedure to stick a set of 13" superlights, janspeed 4 branch & pipe, lowered and a set of cibe spotlights on the front

Only in Ireland....YouTube - Silver twin cam

Insurance here is mental. What age are you?

Get a mate to start the scooby from cold...make sure it hasn't been warmed at all with the bonnet open listen as it starts for a rattle from the bottom end. Then hold a small rev on it and listen again.
The 3 month warranty sounds like a good plan
