Default what lengths - sacrifices did you make to own a scoob and keep it running?

Well I now have my next one.
Every time I turn the key i know it was worth it.
Never left SN even in the years when I didnt have one.

Bearing in mind I am 42 - I have slept on mates floors, stayed with parents and done all night shelf stacking in a supermarket and bought virtual no clothes or other luxuries over the past 2 years.

I now have my next classic with a real high spec and money spare to run her.

It really was worth it. And having to save and work so hard for it - really makes me appreciate it twice as much.

How about you lot - anyone go to big lengths to keep their expensive scoob habit going (sounds like class A dosent it!)

Glad you have achieved your goal may you have loads of fun with it now.

I am currently scoobless although I did go and look at a STi today but walked out of the dealers as they were being a little silly

wow, that's commitment there steve

i'm in a different situation but same sort of thing, i had the chance to sell the scooby tommorow. nice guy, very keen, was willing to travel a long way for the car so a very good chance the car and me would be parting company.

i got all emotional cleaning it out and phoned him up to cancel him coming, he's phoned back offering a bit more money to make the deal happen. i've turned down his generous offer.

so that's my sacrifice really, turned down a great offer on a great car. what an odd bunch us enthusiasts are

i'm a **** i guess, but a **** with a nice scooby on the drive

Im a **** too lol
Seen other people drive off on my last two - after putting alot of work into them!
So determined this isnt going to happen with this one.
Money is fine at the mo. But if things did get a bit tight again I would just buy a shed and drive that and store the scoob

Steve

I am in Kent too - do you ever go to the Kent meets?

no, never been to a meet. owned scoobys for 10 years now, seems a bit rubbish on me for not getting involved

that's the daft thing with mine, i don't earn a great deal and the money should have been the carrot to selling up.........but i just couldn't do it.

i'm sure i'll look at my next bank statement and regret it

Yes, I've had virtually no social life other than the occasional night out with a girl for the past year and a half. And for 6 months before that I did virtually nothing saving for it.

I'm 21, and I'm not doing that anymore, so sold up and bought a nice reliable sensible car, and I'm getting out and enjoying myself from now on. I will of course be back to Subaru and performance car ownership, but only when I can afford it whilst having a life at the same time.

In 2002 I chopped my classic in for a bug-eye STI, was worth it when I burbled into my bosses unit under the lights it's blue/black mica looked awesome.

The 80-100 hours a week was a bit of a pain, but once paid for it was modding time, drab and standard looking from a distance. Everything else up-rated or improved.

I gave up my home three years ago to keep my Scoob, but with this recession hitting I made the right choice in the short term.

Car is nearly done now, and by February I'll be skint but happy.

dunx

P.S. hoskib, a very nice Scooby !

P.P.S. Never had a fancy/expensive holiday in my life, just drive the Scoob !

I sold my renault 5 GT turbo for 5k then saved 1k a month to by the car at 17k.
Kept it for 6 months then took it into a tuner for a remap and a decat
Got carried away and got the car back 5 months later with a hefty bill.
I now have no cash at all but i have a 4k over draft available which will be getting hammered this year.
PS. dont tell the wife.

I am single at the mo...so dont have this problem. But in the past...its been quite cloak and dagger to get stuff done....kind of have to down play the price to them....'it wont cost much' said in passing in an off hand casual way.

Good work

What is it about Scoob ownership and modding? I bought my Scoob three weeks ago and vowed to keep it as it was. By the end of week two I'd de-tangoed it, by week three new ICE, it's now week four and I'm looking at wheels and wondering if the PPP is enough...

I made the mistake of taking my Dad's 08 STI hatchback out for a run the other day and it made my PPP'd Bug seem positively pedestrian

For you men that have wimmins who don't know the truth about your car expenditure consider this, have you looked at her handbag/make-up/jewellery collection lately? All of that stuff can run into thousands too, you're probably both hiding it from each other hoping that the other will never find out the true cost

Have pity on me though, I love all that girly stuff but also have a passion for fast cars and gadgets, I have DOUBLE the expense

i have spent just under 13k on my car over the past 6 years

and that is with me doing most of the labour

the car cost me 8.5k, so it stands me well over 20 grand, for a battered old POS thats worth nothing = LOL!

Spent in the region of £20k on mine over a few years. There's nothing left on the money tree and these big guys turn up with mr visa every month threatening with a thumb-screw.

Spent £3k two weeks before christmas, that went down well.

I've made plenty of sacrafices, but i wont go into them.

I sold my gt4 wrc and bought myself a Spec d in 07 when they were doing the discounted month to shift the last few. I took the car on finance plus a 3 grand deposit. Kept it for 3 weeks and absolutely hated it. Traded it in and lost my 3 grand deposit plus a little more (in only 3 weeks of ownership ) Ordered myself the new civic type r that had just been released at the time. So in need of a car till my civic was built and delivered and being pretty broke from my scoob deposit and new deposit on the civic i ended up with a crx del sol. Car was ok but i had just came from an sti scoob so was rather underwhelming overall. I saved like a mad man between may and july (my civic delivery date) as i wanted to reduce the finance payments as much as possible.

Sadly the dealership kept putting back the delvery date every month until i wasn't getting my car until september so i told them to shove it. I kept saving until november 07 and ordered myself an 05 plate facelift DC5 which i loved dearly. Again more problems as it developed a phantom knocking noise from the front driverside wheel area. After 2 months and 2 independant specialists the fault could not be found so the importer offered me back a FULL refund which i accepted.

As chance would have it i was in need of a car and he had just imported as fresh 96 spec DC2. Having always wanted one i said i would take it plus the 8 grand difference from the dc5. Kept the teg for 10 months and absolutely loved it to death. The only reason i sold it was i wanted something a bit newer and thats why i'm back on sn again. I bought myself an 06 Hawkeye Sti Type UK.

So to summise i bought a spec d on finance in 07 and after that i saved like mad and had some awesome hondas and now have an 06 sti that is all bought and paid for due to driving a crap crx and saving

Cheers
Melly

mine cost me 1 fiance, one girlfriend, more than enough aggro with the last misses and i'm still paying off the loans for the next 3-4 years cos i couldn't be doing with saving to mod ..... patience is a virtue ..... a virtue i never had and never will have ..... one of the reasons i bought a scooby!

I waited 8 yrs b4 i bought 1 as i was too young, only 18 and getting stupid 4 grand+ for insurance quotes, so now 27 bought my 1st scoob an 05 uk Sti and loving it although the GF had her doubts about the running costs etc i re-assured her it wont be that bad 1st 2 weeks I spent a thousand pound on fuel (true) and god knows how much ive done on fuel since! Lets just say for the few holiday months i had with the car, was a skint 1
I must admit im noticing the difference in costs compared to her 1.3 fiesta lol

I bought my car with a loan, bought mods on cards and ran up a debt of £15K. Sold the car and spent the money on the house and dumped all my debt onto a secured loan to reduce the payments. Since December I've saved £4K which could get me another decent classic.

OR I keep going, pay off the £15K hopefully by the end of the year and get another loan of about 7.5K and buy a P1.

The hardest thing will be when I have P1 buying money and still have the debt. I'll quite easily talk myself into buying one rather than pay off the debt.

I really don't want another decent car until the only debt I've got is my mortgage.
