Buyers Guide for a Type-R??
Im currently looking at buying a version 4 or 5 type-r. I was jusst woundering if their are and buying guides? what to look out for ect? i know the usual body work straight, matching panels ect but what are the main things i should look for. The car is going to be a on going project. I have only got between 5-6K to spend on buying the car.
Any pointers please?

Been looking myself lately dont worry too much about paintwork aslong as the panels are original they are all getting on a bit now so most have had paint at some point.
listen for big end noise on v5 and v6 as this is a common problem make sure there cold when you get there.
v3 and v4 tend to have a bit of piston slap from cold but this is not too much to worrry about.
just make sure dccd is working fine and they go through the gears nicely

Cheers for that! regarding dccd, it can only be mated to certain boxes right? i.e. cant a wrx or other sti boxes to it. I ask this as i dont want to buy one which hasnt got the closer ratio box on it, or am i been blonde :P

The dccd can be fiited to any box but once you have drove a couple you will know the difference between gearing and the type r's and ra's gearing is quite a bit shorter.
Matthew.
Also depending on how much you want to modify a v5 or v6 can have a ecutec remap which is a lot cheaper than mapping a v3 or v4.
And make sure what ever you buy has been mapped for UK fuel.

Ok so i really need to take out afew and see what they drive like? In all honesty i have been putting sum extra cash away for a simtek ecu for future upgrades cheers matthew.

You can get them with a longer 5th gear - I think on V-Ltd's, also I'm not too sure, but maybe the V6 has this as standard. It's much better for motorway driving.
If it's a project then it also depends on what you intend to do with it. For example, mine's a V4, so low ratio 'box. I then had this swapped for a UK 6 speed (with DCCD) as I also wanted the extra strength of the later 'box for future power upgrades.
There are plenty for sale at the moment. If you want to have it as a project, try and get one which someone has already started; uprated brakes, gearbox etc as it'll cost a small fortune to do these later (trust me I know ).
Good luck and good choice.

You "may" get a v3 for your money, not much of a chance of a decent v4 or 5 for that sort of cash though (there is the odd exception )
5 and 6's dont suffer from much, but what they do suffer from most is MAF sensor problems and a lean spot higher up in the rev range, and these cars were mapped for 100 ron fuel, not 97.
The good side is that the ecu on the 5 and 6 is mappable (not on the 4 though) but there is no real buying guide, you just have to make sure that there are no unruley noises coming from the drive train etc, and they have been well maintained throughout their lives.

There are 2 now! on in private (new import) and peccy's in the for sale section.
Only one falls into the op's bracket and thats top end (5995) then add another 600 quid for a major service (cambelts etc) so over 6.5k (i always have my cars fully serviced when i buy a second hand one, you know where you are then, rather than worrying about the cambelt snapping etc). So even that one may be outside the OP's original pricing... then look at other bits that can be worn (brake discs and pads for instance)...
Super unleaded fuel only (unleaded kills engines) and always a little safer with octane booster

Thankyou for all the replys, its a great help. I was looking at a v-ltd on autotrader i think, that was about 6k. I am planning on goin ppg later on, porberly over the winter when i wont be using it and most proberly have the engine in bits and drop some forged rods n pistons in
I would like to find one which has had minor modifications done to it such as brakes ect but ther few and far between with my budget
So im taking its going to be tricky getting a decent V4 for about 6k? im not 2 fussy about engine work, can do all of that at work its more body and drive train im worried about :S
I would do exactly the same regarding servicing but do it myself, then i can be assured its been done right. Regarding fueling ive been thinking of E85, if i can get it, but the first thing i would do is change the ecu and get it mapped. Im not in any rush to get it on the road, but it would be nice to have a little play down the b-roads :P
Again thank you for all your contributions, its much appreciated and will really help me getting my toy hehe

As with all performance cars, find one that you like, put a holding deposit on it and then get a full mechanical inspection, preferably from a local Subaru specialist. If you're looking to pay 6k for a car, the last thing you want is one with a engine about to let go! Go for one with as few previous owners and as much documentation as possible; you want evidence that its been cared for, as it'll be getting on in terms of its years and, of course, it'll have been driven hard from time to time.
Also, remember: if you don't like the owner, you probably won't like the car. Ask them to take you out for a spin, do they give the car a chance to warm up? Where do they get it serviced? What petrol and oil do they use etc.. Do they know anything about the mods on the car? The answers to these questions will indicate whether you're dealing with someone who really looks after the car and someone who just bought it cause it was quick but has no real inclination to look after the car optimally.
Also, if it's going to be used on a motorway regularly, or you value a degree of refinement, I'd suggest you look for one with a longer 5th gear! 4k rpm to maintain a steady motorway cruise will wear a bit thin, I suspect!

nso4- thank you i will keep that in mind when looking, a car with some form of history is better than a car with no form of history as you know where its has been ect Regarding the longer 5th is that only with v-ltd editions and V5 onwards? if i did find a real minter that i fell in love with im sure i could persuade my rents to lend me some extra cash
But in all honesty i dont mind a car that would need abit of work as it would keep me busy plus i can turn it into a minter and admire my work, smile all round

Hey will be selling my STI version4 type R in a few weeks time ;-)
Low milage (89000km) and since the car was imported from new it comes with a full uk service history (cambelt done last year).

IMO, a V4 would be 5-6. V5/6 would be 5-8 You will find some lower priced but probably ropey. You will also find some more than 8 but then in the current market you will still find them at 8 in 6 months time. Only the very special ones have any chance of selling above 8.
The number of 2nd hand Imprezas on Pistonheads is going up every day. I'm very sad and am hoping my old car appears on PH so I have a look pretty much every day.
