Classics are just normal keys AFAIK. New-age keys have a transponder in them which speaks to the barrel and ECU as part of the immobilisor and as such need to be set up by the dealers for about £140 a time

Classics still have transponders. Well 98 onwards definately do.
It'll be around 70 odd quid from subaru, or 20 odd from a key cutters, but won't be a genuine key.

UK cars 1997 onwards have transponders built in the ignition key which immobilises the engine.

You can get a the key cut easy enough which will unlock the car and switch on the ignition, but it won't start the engine (or it'll fire up and cut out after a few seconds). It will need to be programmed. (unless you fit an aftermarket ECU ).

And please punctuate, I'm running out of breath!
