Hi all,
I've been a member on here since I bought my classic last year. I 've loved it on here, learnt a lot about classics and had some general banter.

Now, as some of you know, my Impreza is a second car. I am lucky enough to have a nice company car (Currently a Golf GT-sport 170 DSG) so the Scoob does less than 3000 miles a year.

I was wondering what your opinions are of this:

I've been offered a 54 plate WRX-SL FOR £5495 with 70,000 miles on it from a trade contact, FSH, cambelt done at 60k and WR blue, HPI clear, 2 owners from new and mint.

Now, experts, does that seem like a good deal or not?

My classic has 270-odd BHP and 300lb ft of torque.

How much power will the 54 plate WRX-SL have? Will it feel "SLOW"?

And finally, my car has Warlbro/3" zaust (decatted) Ecutek, K and N panel filter, STI5 rear spoiler, P1 front lip and fog light covers, x reg, 97,000 miles and FSH (done twice in the 12 months I've had it in less than 4,000 miles!) great bodywork, A/C all working.

Is it worth £3500 in your opinion, as thats what I would need to get for it, to justify the new impreza?

Personally, I wouldn't change to a newage wrx from your car, especially if it's a weekend toy. It will feel slow compared to your car. If anything modify yours or go for an sti (classic or newage). But, if you do want to go ahead then yes your car should be worth £3500 - it's just finding a buyer in these hard times.

as a weekend toy the classic is a far better tool imho

Go for it they are a better car than a classic, it will feel slower because it doesnt have the same level of tuning as your classic does, get it mapped and see the difference you will upset all these classic owners because your new age will be just as quick
Oh and just to rub some salt into the wound a friend of a friend had a classic, he upgraded (yes upgraded) to a blob wrx SL, hated it at first, after a little while (a month or 2) loved it more than the classic, now he is on a hawkeye 2.5 WRX (and the only engine he blew up was in the classic!)

You really need to quantify 'better', but, in essence yes I agree they are, otherwise Subaru would have wasted £millions developing it. However, it does depend on what the owner wants/expects from their car. For me it's a weekend toy and I want it to feel fast/raw. I'm sure that there are plenty of newage cars that will be far quicker than mine.

Lets see now, you sell your 270bhp classic for £3.5k and buy a heavier 220bhp WRX for £5.5k and have to spend how much to make it as quick as the car you just sold? How is that better?

Test drive the it first and make up your own mind.

For your information we purchased a 53 plate blob with 35k miles last year. Sold it 3 months later and went back to the classic as we found it slow, unresponsive and downright boring. Definitly not as good value for money.

But that is my opinion and everyone likes different things about the whole range.

Ah well, staying with the classic as all i got offered was 3grand or a load of crap swaps!
