Anyone experienced power assisted steering failure?

I seemed to have had a PAS leak somewhere on the motorway
Boy did I get a shock trying to turn onto the roundabout after the slip road . This PAS makes us real namby pamby drivers I tell you!
Where is the most likely point for failure. Is it a DIY job? Am I best going to a dealer to get it sorted? What sort of cost is likely?
Thanks (I think )
Mick
PS I have some photos of the offending underside that I could e-mail if it could help someone give me some guidance - pretty please

This is your lucky day.
Having just experienced the same problems last week.
I believe the rack has a tendancy to leak at the seals and it mey need re-sealing, however it may only be the vey fixable problem of a loose bolt which is allowing the oil to leak out.
If you get it onto a ram so you can get a good view and use a torch, look up towards the engine above the bottom part of the rack and fidlle around with a few bolts to see if the are loose. I suspect it has just vibreted itself loose. Mine did and saved me £300 plus 3-4 day wait.
Hope this helps.
