Emission test failure?

As Im getting my Scooby decatted, I have looked into this.
If you fail a road side test you get a set amount of time (about 7 days I think) to get it fixed. Unless your car is pumping out vast amounts of smoke etc, then you can be done for driving a dangerous vehicle, like you would be done on bald tyres.
Im sure someone will correct me if this is wrong.
