Question

Thinking of fitting some harnesses because my wife to be gets quite scared at times.(all the time)

Which sort do I go for

How do you fit these i.e bolt behind back seat ?

The main reason i am asking is because this is a serious matter when the belt is holding you in.

The current wise word is that these could potentially do you more harm than good if you were in an accident & roll the car, because the Impreza does not have a roll cage (as standard ) & is possibly likely to have the roof collapse. This can cause head/neck/spinal injury to someoe who is rigidly strapped to the seat Worth having a look at the type of impact sustained by pre-bugeye scoobs that have rolled on track days. Again, although bugeyes have a much more rigid & planned "safety zone" as standard, the same could apply in the worst of cases.

However, with that caveat in mind, you need to have your harnesses located at the rear seat-belt points as a minimum (causes less strain on the shoulders than if mounted on the floor-pan) & better still at a horizontal line to the height of the shoulders. Obviously a wider 3" set will spread the load better than 2" and 5pt is ideal, as it stops submarining. 3pt & 4pt differ in the way that they mount at the rear, with 4pt having less of a load on the car than 3pt.

Now, perhaps I am being stupid, but if you roll isnt it better to be held securely rather than only loosely by the standard seat belt. Also you are implying that when you roll the standard seat belt will allow you to get out of the way of the roof - but the airbag wont - that's gonna keep you nice and upright surely ?

Anyway, the harness does make driving on tacks easier anyway, imho.

Cool

Trigger

Have a think about it. If your body is held rigid in the seat & the roof caves in, when it hits your head, there is nowhere for your body to move and disipate the energy, therefore leading to moe severe head, neck, spinal injury.

If when the roof caves in, your body can move from side to side & possibly forwards, then the energy impacted on your head can be spread into lateral movement. Also possible that your body has moved to left or right before roof gets to level of hitting head.

Saying that, stick a rollcage in and you would be silly not to have harnesses because the injury would come from flopping about the inside of the car & hitting the rollcage itself.

Agree that harnesses give you better bracing on track though.

Exclamation

Speaking as someone that has harnesses fitted (but only use them on the track), you will VERY soon get bored with them on the public road - can't reach the stereo, shut an open door, reach ticket machines etc......
