Buying a Subaru....
#1
Hi all,
Its the first time I've been on the bulletin board as I've just decided I want a Scooby! Rather than ask the usual question of what the differences are between UK/Jap, WRX STi etc etc... could someone reply with a shortcut to the relevant threads etc... I've had a quick look through but can't find anything.
Cheers

UK spec low miler. For a '99 V reg with sub 20k on it your looking around the £15-16k mark from a dealer I would think for the old shape turbo. You can probably haggle a bit to get a bit more off. Check second hand prices on the Subaru Website.

Is the markup from a dealer quite high though???? Wouldn't I be better to buy privately (maybe from a Scoobynet member!) and save myself a few quid.?? Obviously I don't get the warranty but being a newer car I would expect it to be reliable ish??

I bought mine from a fellow Scoobynet member for £12,000 a couple of weeks ago - a fair price to both buyer & seller I thought for a similar spec to what you're looking for. Buying here you have a degree of assurance it's been maintained by an enthusiast. The biggest problem is mods - these are worth more to an experienced owner than to newbies like you and me who may be a bit uncertain about the insurance implications. Subaru dealers are obviously the safest option but just look at their prices ! You can get new imported WRXs from car supermarkets for under £18,000 and even cheaper if you import yourself.

I think an import will be out of the window as some of the insurance quotes have been naff. I've been getting quotes over £2500 for imports, and about £1300 for Uk specs.... Times have changed over the last couple of years. When I was 20 (I'm 22 now), I insured an Import Veilside 300ZX TT for £1200 FC!!
I'd be happier to buy from an enthusiast, obviously due to the fact that they probably look after and maintain them properly, and they should be cheaper than from Subaru direct.

Fozzyboy, when "Imports" are mentioned, think "uk spec imports". These are cars that have come from the EU and are full UK spec, but just didn't have the price hike associated with IM.
The differences are:
- No alarm - so owners fit a different alarm from standard (a Good Thing IMHO)
- No sticker on back saying "turbo 2000 awd"
- 1 year warranty rather than 3.
- No locking wheel nuts
Insurance is the same for a UK spec car whether it's from the EU or UK.
You should find they'll be a bit cheaper as the original owner saved a fortune. Or at least I did. But mine's not for sale.
Good luck,
Nick.

Sorry I should have said I meant UK-spec imports (normally from Holland or Belgium). My point was really that the ready availability of new UK-spec imports (of ALL makes/models of course)at low prices is exerting downward pressure on used prices, most notably on 1-3 year old cars. UK-spec imports should be insured at the same rates as UK-sourced cars - that's true of both our current cars and my previous car. The Insurance forum will help here...

Hi chiark you took the words right out of my mouth ! By the way I've seen it said WRXs now come with a 2-year manufacturer warranty, and tins.co.uk is saying 3 years ! What's your understanding ?
