ripspeed or whatever it is
just like having a big tv
ive got a 21 inch tv
what does that say?

Where do you live - rural?
detached or semi or terraced?,
how much do you earn, blah blah

What does it fookin matter

i have a silver crest head unit in my fiat, i've been on a caribbean cruise and been to the maldives, i've got a couple of houses, one with a pool, no mortgage

and you go on about head unit

is it cos u broke in the car to nick it

They don't have loads of money. The cars been bought on the 'Never never' and after paying the hire purchase, fuel, insurance e.t.c there is no money left for mods.

Why bother with a decent sound system in a a Scoob, you can't hear it over the engine anyway. I think Subaru knew what they were doing when they fit the crap sound system.
If i wanted a fancy sound system i would have it in the house, not in the car, reguarly see motors with the Pioneer/Kenwood stickers....just advertising for the car thief.

I think this is the answer the op is looking for, ive got an Aldi cdplayer/stereo in my Scoob, it plays cds and I can listen to radio 2, 'pumpin' bass isn't my thing.

I kinda understand, Having said that I would mug for a ripspeed head unit right now, I have the 2002 sti stock tape player.... That chews up all my early 90's tapes I dug out.

Maybe the question should be why do car companies think its ok to charge 27k for a car and then not put in an awesome head unit in the first place!!

Maybe its an import car and this radio picked up more than Radio 2, maybe he took out his "£2k ice system" and wanted to fill the gap in the dashboard, maybe he does not use the radio much?

The difference between driving and owning £27k car is £27k + cost of the credit - depreciation of the car = an asset that is dropping in real value every second.

you are all picking up on sound systems here, i'm on about mods in general.

the amount of posts i've seen on here ppl asking about advice on cheap stuff on ebay............cheap dumpvalves..............cheap headers.........cheap coilovers.

9/10 times if something is selling cheap its too good to be true and you will get what you pay for.......

if your looking for performance you want the best on the market not the cheapest thats gonna end up blowing your engine or cause problems

I agree with certain things ie cheap engine parts etc, anything that if it broke/failed could cause damage etc, but the cheap stereo bit implied that people with expensive cars should always spend top money on stereos/parts, when sometimes(not all the time) cheaper ones are just as good

Whilst I would not suggest that the above example means the owner is skimping (this is only audio after all), but it does lend the question why people buy these cars and skimp on general maintenance and any chosen power mods etc. I think this boils down to the fact that they actually can't afford the car to begin with, regardless of what HP agreement (there lies part of the tale) they are signed up to.

I can only see this getting worse over the coming years. Less money in the pocket.

It depends on your definition of skimping, not everything expensive is worth the extra money.

e.g. Defi's are considered to be the 'industry standard' gauge but many people by other brands such as Auto Gauges,Racetech,Prosport e.t.c.

Do these gauges perform badly = no
Do they look out of place = no
Are they crap because they cost 4 times less than Defi's = no

I agree you get what you pay for on some items but on others it just seems to be a lot of marketing hype, imo.

Just because something costs a lot doesn't mean it is be best its just that people are willing to pay for it... just because something is less expensive doesn't always mean it is crap.

Be careful, brand snobbery is the way of the chaver.

because I'm a grown up I couldn't care less (any more ) about the stereo in the car.

I like having a tape deck and cd as a stock install.

reminds me of some fat git I saw at subaru dealership a while ago arguing the trade in of his car had to be worth £2K more because of the pump'in bass system.

no actually, its made the car worth less and devalued it, you big fat chav.

I did have a DAB remote system in my last car- now I miss that. Planet rock all day long !!!

someone else said it though- its coz car bought on never never and they can't afford to upgrade stuff like the radio.

I couldnt do without my Kenwood headunit, type R front speakers and XPL Kicker sub in my car(althought not a subaru) as the factory equipment was crap. I'm in my car traveling approx 4hours a day at the mo, its its nice to beable to listen to Paul Simon or Dave Pearce lol in the best quality possible.

Plus i can crank up my tunes in my car, in the house my 2.5k worth of HiFi hardly gets used as i have neighbours!

I spent quite a few years in the motor trade and let me tell you that there are a lot of people running around in £27k cars who barely have the cash to put petrol in the tank or keep some food in the fridge. A lot of people get into a 'must have it' mentality and pull out all the stops to get into a car and then can't really afford to run it.

I actually went in to Halfrauds last week looking for a IPOD headunit to put in my '£2,700'. Forester that I use purely for commuting and football runs.

I actually bought the £80 ripspeed unit , as I could not see the point of paying £100.00 more for something Ill leave in the car when I sell it.

It looks pretty naff, but who cares? It wont be the first choice in a smash grab - sounds better than the old Subaru unit and plays/charges my Ipod. Fit for purpose - yeah!

My Impreza did the full works install: Head Unit/dynamat/custom stealth speakers/Subs/ipod adapter etc, when i bought it though.
It also had defis - so that must make me a hypocrite
