Hi all

I am considering the possibility of getting a standard uk turbo between 1995-1997. I will be using the car on a daily basis and cannot afford the car to be off the road for any long periods of time. I am only 21 and have a limited income. Can I expect 22mpg under normal driving? Apart from regular oil changes is there much else that needs to be done (ex cambelt). I understand the gearbox and clutch is a weakpoint but I can't afford to keep repairing them. I will be keeping the car relitively standard apart from air filer/exhaust.

I don't wanna be in a position where I cannot keep the car on the road.

Regards

Mark

Thumbs down

Mark - dont do it mate - I got mine at 22yrs old:
Insurance - £1200
MPG - 18mpg on average
Clutch - 2 in 14 months
Servicing costs - fookin' stooopid

Either buy a cheap earlier import and rag it or look elsewhere for yer thrills
I can safely say I regret buying mine...

To be honest, your largest costs will be insurance and fuel.

I estimate insurance will cost you in the region of 1,500 to 2000 quid a year.

22Mpg is about right
Tyres are about 500 quid a set(lasts 15,000-30,000 miles).
Servicing is every 7,500 miles
Usual cost is 100 quid for a 7,500 mile one
150-200 for a major service.

Big bills come in at 30 and 45,000 miles where service costs are around £450-600.

Brake pads(last 22,000 miles about) are around 120 quid from a dealer and disks(last about 30,000 miles) are around the 240 quid mark.

Depending on how you drive clutches and gearbox can last for the life of the car or as little as 15,000 miles

The cars are generally reliable, IF serviced regually and you let the engine warm up and cool down.

Impreza's may be getting cheaper to buy, but they are not a cheap car to run

Yeah thats what I thought!

I have been looking for a celica gt4 carlos sainz for the last few months. I was due to pick up an import version last week but the owner sold it b4 I got there!

I know a lot about the celica and its running costs seem better - stronger gearbox and clutch. Also the carlos sainz is much rarer.

I would love to get a scooby but guess it might be better to wait a while till I can safely say I will not have any financial problems if something went wrong.

Many thanks for your replys

Mark

Cool

Mark,

You state that you are 21, have you got any insurance quotes yet?

Around town and driving normally you will see around 18-20 MPG and you can expect high 20s on the motorway. A set of tyres is around £400 and they will last anything between 12 and 20 thousand miles depending on your driving.

The Impreza needs servicing every 6 months/7500 miles with an interim service costing £100. Every 24 months (2nd, 4th, 6th etc years) is a major service which requires all the fluids changed and will cost around £400-£450. Every 36 months (3rd, 6th, 9th etc years) is the cambelt service and this will cost you around £450. The real killer service with Imprezas is the 90,000 mile/72 month service as this is a combination of the 24 and 36 month service and can cost anywhere between £700-£800. If you are looking at a car around this age/mileage then make sure this service has been done.

Thanks ever so much for the offer m8 but I only do Jap cars. I have considered getting an Integra Type R - amazing running costs but hefty insurance. Or a Civic VTi - pratical, cheap, quick.

Hi, I'm getting late teens as a MPG on a commute between maidstone kent and portsmouth,Tyres around 14K, clutch around 45K its been rock solid as far as reliability goes and has now done 138K. If the running costs put you off look at a MR2 Turbo great fun to drive and late 20's for MPG, Servicing about the same and was fine until I forgot the roundabout was there
