Angry Police taking photo of wife

The wife has been pulled for a number plate offence today on her way home from shopping.

The spacing on the plate was a little wider than should have been . No altered letters or anything.

Ayway the copper issues her with a £30 fine and takes a photo of her. Is this normal or is he just a perv?

He also wanted her to get in his car and leave our 5yr old son in her car alone.

Surely the cops can do enough people for speeding/mobile phone use/ no tax, insurance etc rather than fine a young attractive female for something this trivial. Just another easy target I suppose.

Whatever happened to a bit of verbal advice?

I believe that you can refuse to be photographed: the Human Rights Act is your friend there. With regards to getting into their car: you dont have to get out of yours, let alone get in to theirs.

Does this appear a little harsh to others.........giving the circumstances expalined?

Obviously the plates were illegal [lettering spaced wider than it should have been] but I can't get my head round it. A polite young female with a child in the car committing a very minor traffic offence and in the current financial climate, gets the fine.

I mean, if it were a local known hardened criminal who had been driving the car I could fully understand and support the police in that situation.

You sure the legislation covers a gap WIDER than it should have been. IIRC it states the gap has to be atleast 11mm between letters, but im not 100% if theres a maximum?

Maybe someone else can confirm?

different when the shoes on the other foot aint it "mate"

must have been noticably different from a distance,or was he just wandering around tesco's car park with a tape measure looking for "innocent victims"?

they normally ask you to sit in their car to get you off the side of the road for safety reasons, but they cant force you to.
wat was your lad gona do if he was left in a car alone 3 foot away?
drive off doin a rolling burnout sparking a police chase across 3 countys?

Sounds like the copper was throwing his weight about a bit.

As for the legality of number plates read this

same issue here... they stopped me for bad spacing, and found out i was carrying extra passengers lool..

for the number plate, they only gave me a paper and told me to get proper spacing plates, get it checked, and get the paper stamped somewhere they carry out MOT... and send the paper off by post... no fine or anything....

3 points and £140 fine for the passengers though

The fine does seem a little harsh. I would have thought that just pointing out that the lettering was incorrect and would need changing would have been fair.

Was the PC aware that there was a 5 year old in the car??

Was your wife asked to leave her car, or did she get out anyway after being pulled over?? Was it a busy road??
This may be the reason why she was asked to sit in the police car for her safety.

Either way, perhaps you should raise a complaint. You should have the PC's details from the ticket you were issued.
They will look into his actions, either way though the fine will stand as the law is the law?
Sucks, eh!

How can this be true? How could the police ever arrest anyone? The crims would just have to run to their car and sit in it, while cheekily thumbing their nose as the policeman stands impotently fuming.

A caution or simple process is one thing, a "proper" crim is something else, and would involve an arrest ?

you could say the same about a nice set of alloys - you don't see them when you're sat in the car

Not only could you get a fine, but if DVLA find out, and you have bought it as a private plate, there is a notice informing that it can be withdrawn by DVLA at any point for illegal spacing etc.

Unbeknown to you, a small fuel leak in the car is making its way under the heatshield and on to the turbo, then the car bursts into flames.

Given the proximity of the fire to the main fuse box and the intensity of the burn the central locking circuit is disabled within seconds.

Whilst you stand there screaming at the key fob your child burns to death strapped in the car seat in the locked car you cant get in to.

Thats why you dont leave children unattended in a locked car, ever.
