Default How much for tyre fitting?

I have 4 tyres that I want to put on my RB5 alloys. I enquired locally today and I was suprised at the price........£15 each + vat. This was for valve and balance etc.

So for around 40mins work they want near £70

Is this the going rate?

Think my mate who onws a tyre garage charges about £5 for to fit and balance.
They must use expensive valves

While I'm on the subject of tyres. A mate informed me that all tyres have 2 x coloured dots on them [red and yellow I think]. Apparantly these spots indicate heavy spots or something. How true is this and is it important when the tyre is fitted?
Thanks

£40 and they look after your rims !

I thought yellow circles are to indicate where to line up the tyre to the valve, I forget why.

Online fitting prices, some back street ones not listed might be cheaper

Fitting station tyre : Pneus-Online partner station

Used to have a friendly Hi-Q near me, always took my rally wheels and tyres to them for fitting, used to charge me 8 a wheel for everything including ditching and spent tyres.

Always used to throw them some beer money if they got it done quick so my discount always stuck.

I tried to get some tyres fitted recently....seems that some of the larger chains would rather turn you away than fit them. They started quoting "Health and Safety" reasons that prevented them from being able to fit my tyres as they had not supplied the tyres, and could therefore not vouch for their condition.

When I pushed the chap and let him know that he fits second hand tyres for a local rally garage for their cars, all he could say was that it was because they had an account.

Still, we found somewhere else to do it, £30 all in. I still cannot believe that he really thought I was just going to ditch my tyres and buy a whole new set from him

A lot of tyre shops know that people are buying tyres cheaper on the Internet so try to recover 'lost profit' by charging a lot for fitting. I pay about £6 a wheel, but if you just come in off the street with a set of tyres they may well charge what they think they can get away with.

The yellow spot (normally) marks the light point on the tyre and is usually aligned with the valve., The red spot marks the point of maximum radial force variation and is aligned with the dimensional low point on the wheel (which might be marked with a white dot). OE-supplied tyres are usually marked with both dots, tyres supplied to the aftermarket may not have either.

They know a lot of people are buying online and want to make that option less attractive, so they are trying to make fitting difficult for you.

Recently asked the manager at the tyre place I get my Toyos (around £70 fitted etc), and he said that if you went to him it'd be £25 PER TYRE!!

I asked why so dear, and he said, that as they are making nothing on the tyres and are risking damaging a possibly £100 tyre and a possibly £200 wheel when fitting, he had to charge that or risk going bust.

I can see where he's coming from, but £25 a wheel???

I used to pay £4 each for one off and a new one fitted and balanced. The cheapest that I can find now is £7 and thats about half of what many firms are trying to charge.

KwikFit will fit your own tyres for you, but its up to the branch managers how much they charge.

Get friendly, and add that you don't need a receipt I paid £30 beer money for four fitted and balanced recently. And not a mark on the newly powder coated wheels !

Always pay bout £10 per wheel for mine at a well known company. The guy does a good job, doesnt mark my wheels, fits me in whenever i turn up, loves working on the car, and always looks after me when swapping exhausts etc.... He doesnt ask for that much but i always give him a couple of quid extra, goes a long way.

On the subject of tyres and alloys how do you check out a company? A local firm trashed my alloys on my last impreza fortunately they admitted liability and bought a used as new set on ebay although I then took them to my local subaru dealer to be fitted who said they were tricky. My new impreza has the 18 inch Prodrive alloys are these any easier than the standard gold 17 inch and how the hell do you know if you are going to get someone who cares? Between buying on ebay and getting to my local dealer to get two done and then four because the colours didn't match took a nightmare month! Any recommendations in Devon / Cornwall area?

Kwikfit wanted £45 to remove my front tyres and fit / balance them onto two newley refurbed wheels, at £22.50 per tyre change i told them no thanks,

managed to get them done at nationals for £30 all in, still at £15 per tyre change seemed a tad expensive.

Thats steep: Ive known KWs charge £10 for each tyre fitted and balanced. The managers get to name their own prices though (£15 in Wolverhampton, but even thats twice what I can get them done for here).
