Default Cheap BHP Increase from a 98MY UK Car

Hi, me again. I'm sure this has been covered before, so apologies for the repetition, but as someone knew to the scooby game, what is the cheapest way of adding just a modest amount of BHP? (i.e 15-25).

I.e. how much BHP does a different filter get (any you can recommend), a scooby sport exhaust and similar?

Oh, and anyone any ideas what running the car on 97 Ron, rather than 95 is worth?

Thanks...

When you say cheap how much are we talking ?

IMHO i would...

New fuel pump 255 Walbro £70 ish
K&N Panel filter £40 ish (Air box is better than a cone filter!)
NGK PRF 7B Spark Plugs £45 ish
De cat both cat's £200 ish maybe cheaper
ELS - Enduring solutions chip from Zen Performance £200 ish (Maybe abit less!)

IMHO you should always run the car on Shell V power as anything les is not good news and have seen 2 engines melt with standard fuel!

Hope this helps? Good luck buddy.

Sorry it's a ELS - Enduring solutions chip (Blonde moment) lol

It is a non mappable chip set to 1.1bar boost that takes it to roughly 280bhp (possible more with the right mods!)

Easy to fit (Push on) and all you need to do is snip and bend the J1 link back.(Marked J1 on the ecu board!)

This is my old ecu off my old Subaru

Its worth not stuffing your engine up.

I am not sold on the V power argument, I generally get my 97 from Sainsburys and have done over 140K miles in each of my wagons with no real issues.

Tescos 99 ron "combat gas" is also good gear

And if you drive in france the super unleaded is 98 ron and thats not bad stuff either.

But isn't that only for pre 96 cars?

I believe that a version for the MY97 & MY98 cars is in the offing, but it is, yes.

Decat and a fuel pump and a KnockLink is probably the cheapest option. Im not a massive fan of manual boost controllers, but a Dawes and a tweek might help too. Id avoid the air filter; theyre a waste of money. The only other option would be to bite the bullet and invest in an A'PEXi PowerFC or maybe a Simtek: both could be added to the already listed upgrades though (apart from the Dawes, obviously).

IIRC Prodrive believe the standard airbox is good for 350bhp so a filter is not needed. Best saving your money on that one.

The best thing you can be doing is buying V-Power. Gains?? Not sure, not buying a new engine a few grand so at a cost of a few quid each time you fill up it isn't worth the risk.

A decent map, decat etc, the usual ways of doing things will see the best gains. Sticking stuff on the car without a map will be marginal at best because the car can't take advantage.

Same with things like a fuel pump. Adding a new pump won't make a jot of difference as the ecu will take the same amount of fuel as it always has because it doesn't know that the option it there for more.

I had 273bhp from mine with no filter and no fuel pump added.

5t.

My opinion on tuning has always been: If you can't afford to upgrade properly, then you certainly can't afford the cost if your short cut melts your engine.

Stage one upgrade on your car would be: Uprated panel filter, decat/sports cat exhaust, an uprated fuel pump and a remap by a recognised expert via ESL or a completely new ECU such as Simtek. Will see 270-80 and similar torque and be perfectly reliable, not to mention much nicer to drive!

you will need a replacement ECU, as the 1998 models cannot be mapped. As for fuel, I don't think the UK models are as critical as the imports, as they are already designed for UK fuel! As long as your not looking for silly bhp, normal unleaded should be fine!

Full decat exhaust, and you wont need a remap either as the standard ecu will be able to cope with it

...and a dawes device (circa £30), provided you get a boost gauge and don't get greedy with boost. Read up on them.

my advice would be to get the rear anti roll bar uprated and the geometry done.

makes for much more fun than 15bhp can ever give you !!!

Decat + Manual Boost Controller will give most bang per £. Poss a STi filter if yours could do with a change anyhow.

Have it set up on a RR for about £50 and get them to check AFRs and DET whilst adjusting the boost controller. You'll also know how much power you've made.

My car still runs manual boost controller.

I've had an Apexi ecu fitted and mapped by Andy F. It's fab!

There's not really a cheap way to increase the BHP properly on a MY98...although mine had been running a full stainless decat exhaust system and an induction kit for years without having been mapped. That's certainly not the right way to go about things though, and the only reason I didn't have the Apexi fitted immediatly was because I had a diagnostic done, and knew it was running rich and wouldn't damage the engine.

I bought a second hand magnex cat back from scoobyclinic (£100 fitted), and a samota panel filter (£30) which gave my old 98 uk classic 226bhp at the wheels on the clinics rollers, better mid range too, oh yes...better rumble no extra charge.

my classic my99 is running (when i got it 269bhp) he did that with a decat center and a superchip, some people dont like superchips, but mine has been fine, I've replaced the 2.5" exhaust with a full decat 3" and the car feels alot better and pulling alot harder, shame i have gone over the bhp for the td04 now,
I have a new turbo, know what to make my mind up to where to take it for a remap, Andy F price came in very well, but its a long way to go, or could just pop it down to the clinic,

I don't have any experience of the clinic, but if you go to Andy you won't be disappointed.

Mine has quite a few upgrades

Manual boost controllers are easy to fit and set up. Should come with instructions and there are lots of threads on here about it also.

Bob, would it be possible for you to send me a pic of the Dawes setup please? Can't find one for an impreza. Also has your Dawes' bleed hole been enlarged?
Cheers!
