Short version....

1st Started late 1998 as the BBS of SIDC

SIDC becames concerned that comments on BBS (Speeding, Imports, IM) + many others) as not in the best interest of the club - so rebranded as Scoobynet.

A little later, not sure of exact time, bandwidth and server requirements meant it was no longer sustainable on completely free basis. Amid concerns it would die. Simon de Banke took it on and attempted to make it earn its keep through advertising and the shop etc.

Whether it does or not (or is worth the hassle from those who expect to have their way and not put anything back) is something only Simon could answer....

Meanwhile things have gone full circle and the SIDC has its own BBS for club-related matters. Also some members felt the orignal technical focus was being lost amidst the banter and set their own more specialised bbs up. (cynics might suggest as their own personal soap box aswell) on 22b.com

Box of Persil indeed

22B BBS doesn't have to be sensitive to market forces and so when people have been shafted they can say so. So long as they are prepared to go to court to defend it

AFAIR Scoobynet was NEVER affiliated with SIDC in anyway !

Phil Daws started the BBS in Late 98, has always been independant, but had a majority of SIDC peeps as there was nowhere else to go ! Financial and other burdens, made this difficult for Phil to continue running.

Simon took over (cant remember exactly when) but there was some time when the BBS was offline completely !

Now its grown into what you see today, im a little disappointed to be honest, its not as much fun as it used to be ! but hey-ho life goes on !

Exclamation

Ian when the first BBS was set up by Phil Dawes it was going to be the SIDC facility, with Phil as IT Bod for the SIDC.

Richard Grimes did not approve at all and Phil voted with his feet and turned it from SIDC BBS to Scoobynet BBS, Phil had been in control at all times using his own resources.

Richard Grimes anti internet attitude came to a head at an AGM, in the face of popular support for the use of internet as a communications tool, he resigned.

Phil in the meantime had said he would give Scoobynet to me to run in conjunction with bbs.22b.com as I mentioned at the AGM at which Richard Grimes decided to resign.

However Scoobynet was sold to Simon de Bank, Scoobynet 2 was relaunched as Phil had already taken Scoobynet offline after some unpleasantness

Scoobynet 2 has gone from strength to strength regarding its bandwidth utilisation

Memory may well be playing tricks but I'm sure when I first started reading etc it was bbs.sidc.co.uk ?

It was the fear that postings may be uses to make SIDC look bad that lead to the separation from SIDC. Wasn't it the suggestion that meetings/track day detail etc be e-mailed and not posted that led to Dick leaving the SIDC. (Really dont want to stir up long dead discussion on this btw )

And Harry - I only suggested that some cynics might say that about 22b.com
