Default Engine identification with no car?

Ive been given an engine with all ansilaries including turbo and air con etc. (exc intercooler)
It was going to be used for a project that never happened and was initialy aquired from a third party, making me the forth and with no idea of what year etc.

Where should I start?

I think I can regonise that it would have had the side on mounted intercooler and hence the older turbo exit.
Inlet is plain, not red, so that points towards a wrx, unless its as old as V1 and V2?
Wt possible turbos could it be?

Any easy idents I can look for?

The plan is to rip it apart, see where everything goes and sell a few bits dirt cheap on the way.

The engine code would be a better place to start.

Went out to make a start and guess what! It started raining!
Again is there any number on the engine itself.

In trying to show me up, youve made yourself look stupid. ScoobyNet has enough trolls, without you, so run along.

The Version 2 STi had a silver/plain Inlet manifold from the factory.
STi V2 RA had the 5th Injector on the manifold and CDB as you said.
You really need to take a cam cover off and see if its got hydraulic lifters or inner shims and see what codes are on the cams to narrow it down a bit.
