Default 2004 STI & Tracker?

I have a 2004 STI and for some odd reason every now and then, like today, the battery is either flat or very close to it.

Drove my car to work this morning. Sat outside the office for the day then come 5:30 the battery was nearly flat, it just turned over and fired up. Now i'm thinking that something must be draining the battery while the car is sitting there, however this doesn't happen all the time.

I'm suspecting the tracker could be doing this...... looks like this was fitted by/via subaru when the car was new as I have the certificate of installation.

What I would like to know is, if anyone happens to know, do they tend to install these things in the same place and if so doesn't anyone know where? If possible I want to rip the ****** out/disconnect it to see if thats causing the problem as it would be nice to not have to worry whether i'm going to be able to start me car!

Had this on my 53 plate sti mate - as you say the tracker does drain it over time but the smart alternator doesn't help. I had the battery replaced under warranty and ran the car with the side lights on to help put charge back in whilst was driving which helped for a few years. Ultimately needed to replace the battery again but went with a calcium jobbie from Halfords and never had any problems thereafter.

What kind of power rating battery did you go for?

As this is a public forum it would be a bit stupid to disclose the whereabouts of the tracker fitted to any subaru, you never know who is reading your posts.

Battery failure is a common problem. I changed the battery and also bought a battery conditioner.

I had this problem on my 53 reg STI. Subaru did some sort of electronic remap or something on it under warranty (not sure exactly what they did, but they had to get a specialist from another dealer to come up and do it) and this seemed to cure it.

I had this problem with my previous wrx. Replaced it with the said Halfords calcium and never had any problems whatsoever. Batteries tend to have a 3-4 year life so maybe yours is reaching the end of its life.

Is there anywhere that I can get a "lightweight" battery? The one in my Spec C (for what it's worth) is kinda small ...

Cant remember off the top of my head mate but the battery code was HCB005 and it came with a four year warranty. Not the cheapest but I got one when they had 15% off but generally retail at about £75.00.

Thanks for that.

I will see how the beast goes now with my original battery on it. Should I have further probs then I will invest in a new one

IMO If someone wants to nick your car then they will, regardless if it has a tracker fitted, and if it does have one fitted then chances are they will know where/how to find them and soon dispose of them anyway.

I actually came across mine tonight by accident while doing something else. I suspect if they are factory fitted items then Subaru probably don't spend too much time fitting/hiding them up in the first place and more than likely put them all in the same place.

Most have an Inline connector jobbie, that will stop charging.

R geting brave posting

Only niave peeps think they tracking devices are infallibale, Rightly or wrongly so too scared to give secrets away

I might suggest that all that happens is, scumbags know and the "mugs" like us don't. We spend shed loads of cash protecting our pride and joys but most would cry if they knew who easy or cheaply jonny thief gets around them.

Like Ned Kelly a tracking devices main unit power is not the Achilles heal

If I were running a tracking type device, I would buy a spare "Achilles heal" and site it in a place usually/quickly found (even better connected to a "Duff Unit")

Then scumbags reckon there are clear ripping out what looks a real tracking device and registered Unit is still hidden and working fine

I'd be dubious on buying security devices with GSM/Moble/cellphone technology, by the sounds of it Dogs B****** but heard of some easy frigs, for £100-150 but unproven

IMHO IIRC

A friend of mine bought three new Scania tractor units on lease. He picked up 2 on a Friday afternoon from the dealer, but when he went back on the Saturday morning, there was just bare tarmac where the 3rd truck had been parked.

Reported it nicked.

Unbeknowst to him, the lease company had all their truck fitted with Trackers as company policy so when he called them they activated the device.

An hour later the police found the Tracker in the nettles behind the truck park!

Police always thought it was an inside job.

Probably a combination of the tracker and less than 100% battery. The tracker does not go into 'standby' mode quick enough, and needs a board replaced (common problem). The 'smart' alternator does not charge the battery and eventually it gets flat.....

I had this from new, and was flat within a week. Once the board was changed in the tracker it was fine....

Should be about 40mA drain on the battery when engine is off and alarm set etc. If it is more then probably the tracker bringing down the battery....
