Default Road Tax - does it put u off havin a scoob

I've almost bought a bugeye, 7 years since I got rid of my last sccob (what did happen to Mellow Yellow?)

now, this bugeye, 04/01 means £400 a year road tax (although I wont be paying it!)

thats a ****ing joke

does it not put you off having one

Stick to the earlier classic shapes cars, my MY96 UK turbo was taxed for 185 Quid this month, but will go up to 210 in a couple of Years if I have read the info right at the DVLA site.

Save the 200 Quid each Year for upgrades!

But it still would not put me off getting a newer car if one took my fancy.. You only live once and the extra 200 Quid spread over the Year is about 2 Quid extra a Week.

Yes it put me off, I sold mine earlier this year because I knew if I didn't then when I was outraged about the new rules, I would never sell it then I'd be buggered paying the tax and the increased fuel costs.

Tax wouldn't bother me if I was buying now , as prices have come down so much in the last 6 months, easily enough to cover the rises for a few years.

As above, fuel is more of an issue.

This is my view on the situation.

a.) Drive an older car than 2001 which I won't enjoy as much as my Newage Scoob.

or.

b.) Pay the extra 54p a day for tax...

Personally I think 54p a day to enjoy what i'm driving is a small price to pay.

I don't agree with all the rising costs, and I think it's a complete joke they've backdated the whole thing 7 years, that is discusting in my opinion but end of the day what can we do other than get on with it. I attended fuel/tax protest so at least I can say I tried to do something unlike most others.

I'll tax mine in defiance.

The half wits in power claim they are increasing revenue to tackle climate change by getting us to change our driving habits.

What utter nonsense.

My Impreza spend most of its life garaged and does about 5k miles per annum. whilst I do more than 20k miles per annnum in a beat up diesel. Taxed for about £120 per annum.

Surely that exposes just how thick the half wits in power really are.

I worked hard to own my car. I am not giving in to idiocy that easily.

As above. £200 is **** all compared to the cost of running the car for a year (or what I'd lose selling it), but it's certainly annoying. What's worse is that 2 of our 3 cars will be in the top band

No it didn't put me off when I bought my 06 couple of months ago.
In fact, I didn't think twice about it, yes I'd rather be paying £200, but no way is an extra £200 going to put me off buying the car I WANT!
I just see it as weeks wage in exchange for a whole year of fun

i just find it completely mind boggling how the new scheme works to get people into more emission friendly cars by making the NEWER emission friendly cars more expensive than the OLDER emission unfriendly cars....

in japan its like £400per year for their tax but they have a very strict "MOT" and it is expensive to run the older more polluting car (tho still good enough for us to import them)... think maybe we should do that mr.government???

tho having said that im preparing to buy an old old merc lol so that would make me pay more hahahaha

Not really. Scoobs are a **** take to run full stop. It's part of the ownership. Mine costs £400 for 12 months tax, is serviced every 5,000 miles and goes through an average of £150 petrol per week. The are cash cows, end of.

Certainly puts me off - I have an MY 02 Bugeye since new and while I was perfectly happy with it, I am totally peeved with the hike in tax, so much so that I don't really want the car now. But I also realise that to sell the car will now lose a lot. Overall I am perfectly happy to walk into a sitatuoin where I know the costs (petrol and servicing I knew about when buying the car), what I don't like is being dumped on later because the government view us as exploitable.

The government may well yet wobble on the retrospective element of increasing VED. A large number of backbench Labour MPs are apparently (and rightly) against the notion of penalising people for purchasing decisions they took years ago and are prepared to force a climbdown from Darling which would take 2001 - 2006 cars back out of these grossly unfair bands.

I wrote to my local Labour MP about this and he replied saying he agreed with me that it was unfair and that he'd written to the chancellor about it. I'm sure that if enough people expressed their opinions to their local Labour MPs, there would definitely be a climbdown. After all, there's only one thing that MPs care about more than their freebies and the John Lewis list, and that's getting re-elected!

well I suppose £400 isn't a lot to pay when cars are cheaper
I'm in France at the mo (back in UK one day) and the same bugeye i'm looking at (£4k) would cost around £10k over here, no road tax to pay

I don't think it's a question for everyone who owns one, you've no choice at the end of the day, it doesn't put me off. Just annoyed at the way it's being dealt with by the government. I'd be more concerned when i come to sell.

I think one point people are missing is how they are going to feel when they have to hand over more than £400 in readies for road tax. The fuel cost hits you gradually and can be dismissed to a certain extent because it is only £10/20/30...extra per week. However, even if you put 4 quid aside every week in a special road tax savings account you are still going to have to empty that account when the time comes to cough up. In fact, thinking about it, I bet it will be nearer £500 per year if you pay every six months.

I pay £115 per year and the Mrs £35 for our diesels. That feels really good when you're writing the cheque. Do not underestimate how crap it is going to feel when you have to hand over many hundreds of Pounds every year for a stupid piece of round paper. Don't forget that £400-500 is more than the average Scoobynetter takes home every week .

very good point, i think most of this forum will have threads with '£400 for a bit of poxy paper!!!' in the titles next march.
i put a little away each week to cover servicing/toys on the car so it's not so much of a hit, but hell yeah it's a lot of money to me. bloody disgrace but won't put me off having the car.

besides that's what 'they' want you to start thinking like

No.

Agreed it is an annoying tax but on the bright side performance car ownership may become exclusive again

Classic owners... don't think you are safe. You won't be for long and I am willing to bet on that.

As soon as I started doing mileage for work I bought a shell credit card. Over the course of a year I'll save £400 which means my tax is free.

Don't have that extra pint or two and your tax is paid for.

Yes paying more than a year ago truely f*cks me off but I won't let this c*nting government rob me of something I enjoy.

And that is why they tax us. This post is not a dig or a wind up, but so many people are only interested in themselves today and couldn't give a stuff about anyone else present or future that the government will always have to step in.

Ultimately it is the car manufacturer's fault for not supplying cars that are more environmentally friendly, but you do have a choice and if you want to continue damaging the planet then you're going to have to pay for it.

This post is in no way a defence of any of the policies of the steaming pile of horse manure otherwise known as the Labour Government .
