Default Tints and the law

OK people what is the law regarding after market tints these days?

Not wanting to go mad, but a tasteful slightly darker tint to the windows might be nice.

Heard conflicting views as to what is permissable under the police state ... sorry I mean UK law.

Any ideas?

Absolutely NO tinted film is allowed on the front windows. Clear security film is allowed but it must have no tint whatsover.

Rears however are carte blanche

The Law

What is excessively tinted glass?
Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 as amended specify the minimum levels of light that must pass through the windscreen and front side windows. The limits are:

Motor Vehicles first used before 1 April 1985: The windscreen and front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.

Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985: The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%. The front side windows must allow at least 70% of the light to be transmitted through them.

If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light, then the vehicle does not meet the legal requirements

You will find the car has a standard tint which takes it to the legal limit. TBH it is a law i agree with, dark tints at night are dangerous as it dramatically reduces your chance of spotting things like cyclists.

...which will also invalidate your insurance, so if you have a prang you are screwed. Illegal car = invalid insurance.

IF the reason for the accident was directly attributable to the tint being in place.

Would you drive with sunglasses on at night? Would it impair your vision?

and it's also an undeclared mod ! Never give an insurance company an excuse not to pay out - just opens up a whole world of grief !
