Default GUTTED...HAD MY STI V5 A WEEK AND BIG ENDS GONE!!

Well guys

I'm absolutely gutted, as you know just got my STI V5 about a week ago and the big ends just gone today, absolutely gutted. Problem is i'm in a right dilema here, i can't really afford the repair bill as i think i'm looking at at least 2k+ to get repaired, and thats money i do not have. Now i've worked out that i could probably break the car for close to £6k but don't wont to do that as the car is in fantastic condition and has only done 55k miles and has a very good spec.

With the spec of the car i would've been looking at aound 7.5k for the car if i was going to sell it in working order so as the big end has gone what would be the max price i could sell the car for in the condition it's in now???

The car has a very good spec and this year alone has had a new gearbox, new clutch, lightend fly wheel and new diffs all fitted by scooby clinic costing around 3K and have the reciepts for all this., also it had the brembo brakes fitted with brand new performance friction 326mm discs about 2 months ago at a cost of £1200, receipts for this also

What do you think i should do guys, i'm gutted and dont know what would be the best thing to do?

the spec of the car is as follows

STI V5 in Royal Silver

Engine
Graham Goode VF29 Hybrid Turbo
3" HKS Super Dragger exhaust system
Decat downpipe
255 walbro fuel pump
Uprated Conrods and Bolts
Graham Goode induction kit
ECU TEK Remap
Alloy Rad
Light Weight Flywheel
HKS bov
Carbon fibre strut brace

Brakes and Suspension
Gold Brembo Calipers off newage
325mm Performance discs and pads from Scooby Clinic
Standard Rears
Tein S tec lowering springs on standard STI shocks

Wheels and Tyres
OZ Superleggra's with toyo's

Bodywork
Standard STI kit - Spoiler, rear lights, fog covers alloy bonnet.
V6 Front Splitter
Red Mudflaps with Sti Logo's
Crystal light pack
Folding electric mirrors

Interior
Standard STI interior
STI Mats
Alpine CD Headunit

I'm sorry to here that mate thats terrible after only a week? did you buy it privately i take it?

Have a good think what you want to do - it might be worth begging or borrowing the money just to get it done so you can get it on the road, i had the same problem, bought a Scoob for 7 grand and sold it for 4 grand yet it ended up standing me at 14 grand with various running costs and repair bills i.e. gearbox big ends and in the 18 months i had it it finacially crippled me.

Dont take this the wrong way and i'm not really up on my imports but are you sure you'd get 7 grand for it? they just are not selling at the moment.

As much as you love it (and trust me i still miss mine everyday) financial needs come first, if you cant afford it then get shut and get what you can.

I know everyone says go to API and i've no doubt they do a fantastic job but are a little dear in my opinion.

I had a sourced STI bottom end fitted to mine all in for less than 2 grand.

Maybe get a good Scooby specialist to find one and give you a price but i would spend a few hours/days sourcing a bottom end and shopping around.

Good luck

I've been in this boat before and what started out as a 2k reapair ended up costing me close to 5k and in the end i sold the car for 6k, so i dont want to go down that road again, do you think i could get 4.5k for the car as is, as to someone who can work on cars could be a nice car once up and running again as the car is mint.

i've also had a look on ebay and seen you can buy a recon sti engine for £900, maybe it would be worth swapping the engine over instead?

Obviously you need to be careful as the last thing you want is another engine to go pop after a week or so. but if you know what your looking for maybe the way to go.

Mine when pop and a good friend of mine who really knows his stuff sourced an STI bottom end, i never had anymore issues with the car.

have a word with someone at grade-A subaru and see if they have an engine mate. if they do have one they used to bung in the service history with the engine. so you generally know there good. plus iirc you get a limited warranty, or a doa warranty. but they generally need to be fitted within 1 or 2 weeks. id not go down the rebuild route as your going to be sat on a car you have to keep forever no matter what.

the alternative is try and go back to the original seller, and threaten them with legal action? might be a worth a trip to trading standards, as there is no such thing as sold as seen.

Very bad luck m8 used engine the only cheap option but will it last??
If you want it to be a keeper save up and rebuild it properly.
But if you can get 6K splitting it do that you will get nowhere near 6k as it is. Somebody on here just sold a 2001 P1 for £5200.

Personally I think that’s a crap thing to do to threaten the seller of the car if it was a private sale imagine if it was you that sold the car in good faith I know what I would say if somebody came back to me after 1 day never mind a week that’s what dealers are for
If it wasn't knocking when you picked it up it’s not his fault.

yes but did he sell it in good faith?

when you buy a car, can you look inside the engine? of course not!

so how can it be sold as seen?

Just a question, was that car bought from anywhere near Halesowen?

Think I recognise it.

The only rule as such is that the seller must not knowingly misrepresent the condition of the car! So, the buyer would have to prove that this was the case. Not easy! The seller may have genuinely not know the failure was imminent: usually quite sudden if I understand correctly and in this instane the failure has happened a week after its sold so the new owner could have done any manner of bad things to it by then (I'm sure the poster hasn't though!)

Really bad luck! Safest option may be just to SORN it, and wait till you can afford a rebuild you know will last and not leave you even further out of pocket.

My condolences and best of luck getting it back on the road!

Welcome to the fact of owning a money pit called a scooby

I would have it fixed and drive it a while instead of selling, my opinion

im the one that he swapped with and there was no known faults with the car. it has been looked after while i owned it and has had everything it needed, look at some of the bills he has posted.
i have spoken with the scooby23 and he agreed that it was ok when bought.
so find out what has been said before posting like that.

i have the txts on my phone if you want them.

also if i was going to sell a car knowing that something was wrong with it would i sell it to a member of the same forum that i have been a member of for years!

It seems quite common for these cars to let go shortly after they been sold to a new owner. It's probably down to the fact that when you get it you spend the first few weeks driving everywhere in 2nd and 3rd gear in full on attack mode, after then the fuel bills bring you back down to earth and you drive it more sensibly.

If you sell a car with no signs of imminent failure and it lets go a week later how on earth can you be held responsible, it's not like you can look inside the engine is it?

shawn r makes a good point.

I've sold cars before on vw forums (and on them I post under my real name and am fairly well known in vw scene)

what can you do if it goes pop after you've sold it- its just bad luck.

all you can do is be honest in the 1st place.

who's to know how a car has been treated/driven once sold- it could have been redlining for a week as whoever shows off to their friends.

bad luck dude- look at getting it fixed and put it down to experience. you bought a second hand sports car.

to be fair- shawn r looks like he's loved it to bits- and spent a fortune too.

my version, although rough around the edges, came from a trading standards officers mouth. so I will take his word over yours on this occasion.

it makes no difference to me if you sold it him, or some bloke down the street sold it to him. the facts remain the same, a very short whilst after purchasing the car, its engine has failed. there is no such thing as sold as seen! if he is silly enough to not try and get something out of you, then thats his choice. if it were me, id take it as far as neccesary.

no offence to you personally, thats just how it is in my world.

I've spoken to shawn about the car and i'm happy that the car was sold to me in good faith, so please, no blame to go on the seller. like stated, it's the joys of owning a scooby.

Jesus remind me (and probably most people on here) never to sell you anything you sound like a very unreasonable person.

Its just bad luck, I really feel for the guy as I am sure the seller does but if the car was brand new things are different. As it was used and sold in good faith there shouldn't be any come back on the seller. If there is some legal cra* that says different what is the world coming too Nobody would dare sell a used car again
