Is there/what is the differnce between the 2 turbo's?

I think the L stood for "Low" and was a variant found on JDM models (5 doors and Foresters).
It gives some extra low down torque but power drops off quicker than std versions.
Only visual difference I could spot was the extra number of vanes on the compressor wheel.
