Default noisy brakes

Hi

Every time I start my WRX up, it has just started making a is a 'metal on metal' scrapping sound which is coming from the brakes. This stops after 15 mins or so. As it only gets used during the weekends, I put this down to rust on the brakes.

However, this now happens even if I drive if for a few 100 miles on a saturday, leave it over night and then the noise is still there on sunday morning. I took it to the garage where they cleaned up the dics, however it still happens now every time I start the car. The garage tells me it is rust and there is nothing they can do about it - are they right? I didn't think that rusting would start so quickly (ie overnight), plus this has only just started happening, whcih makes me think it might be something else?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

You obviously mean when it's moving ...rust is almost instant on that super shiny surface but it's usually removed after a few yards;I did my disc's and pads all round today and got caught in that spell of a shower,by the time I finished the old ones on the floor had taken on the rust colour obviously only surface..
Are you sure it's not the low pad warning tang it's intended to squeal, mine started doing it last week, not constantly and would sometimes disappear if I dabbed the brakes..
The tangs may not have been refitted and the pads could be really low.
Rust shouldn't make a lot of noise even on the pads.
As for the garage.....

Cheers for the replies

The car is 2 years old with 16k on the clock - at its last service around a month ago the garage told me there was loads of life left on the brakes & that I'd only used up approx 20% of the pads....

So, if its not the pads or rust (as the garage claims), any ideas what it could be ?

i would suggest changing discs and pads. if you are only using it at week ends then the pads could be stuck to the disc, hence grinding noise, if that doesnt cure the problem then i would say it could be a wheel bearing but i wouldnt count on it, dies the grinding come from both sides or one side?

Is it the same garage??
Take it to a scooby specialist m8 if you're not mechanically enhanced, or is there a member close who could perhaps shed some light...

BTW anybody do scoobies suffer from seizing/sticky calipers like voxhalls...

Thanks - the thing is the garage was a subaru one so I (naively) thought they might stop the noise (car still under warranty), rather than tell me that all was fine and it was perfectly normal....!

Copper slip is a lubricant that you put on the back of pads and shims, obviously not the braking surfaces

This helps with brake squeal.

Not trying to take the p155 but if you don't know what copper slip/ease is then you must have limited to no mechanical knowledge.
Unfortunately garages and mechanics can pick this up in an instant...but then that's why forums like this exist.

Bit bored @ the moment so I took this pics of the rust on these discs I removed yesterday, admittedly we got caught in a shower.
The rust is only surface discolouration and can easily be removed with a quick rub ,as the pads should do.
They've been with nature for 24 hours but they took on the discolouration almost instantly.

Thanks - as you say I'm not mechanically minded which is why I asked for help. If I knew how to fix it I wouldn't have asked ! Cheers for all the advice - although if it's not rust or the pads, then any idea what it is ?

My post was in now way meant as derogatory...
Everybody can ask for advice/help,that's what these forums are for.
As I said is there another scooby owner in your vicinity who could perhaps better diagnose the issue, where abouts are you.
What you may find is that someone with a bit of mechanical knowledge will be able to pinpoint the issue.
But then again it's still under warranty so take it back,it's not normal for cars to make strange noises, unless it's Ukranian...
