Question

Hi,
I have a MY93 WRX, which is having the engine removed to find a problem.
The engine will be removed and the heads removed to hopefully see the problem.
While the engine is out what is worth while checking and upgrading?
The problem is either a lifter problem or a piston problem. We don't know until it is removed from the car.
I know I'm clutching at straws but while the motor is out what should i upgrade/replace?
Nothing to fancy, I don't have that much spare money.

I will wrap the turbo and headers to start, downpipe is already done.

Serious reply's please people

If you've got the cash could be worth changing rods and pistons - depending what you use the car for I guess.

If not, get the crank and rods lightened and balanced.

Change the flywheel - makes a reasonable difference to response......

Clutch if it's on it's way out.......

really depends how much cash you got - does get quite expensive

Clutch was replaced last year with a Helix GpN.

Flywheel sounds a good option. Rods & crank? only if she needs fixing. Don't have the need to sort those out if nothing is wrong with thme.
I only use it for the road, no track days.
Nothing is cheap for the Scoob.

I got my RA engine rebuilt and we re-used the rods, replacing two pistons that were damaged. The early ones are quite good. It was only when Subaru started making them lighter for the 8,000rpm rev limit engines that things started to go wrong.

Better to spend the money on quality labour than components made of unobtanium.

Ok,
So which/where should I get the flywheel from then?

Also if it is a lifter problem, can i fit the solid lifters? or do i have to replace the heads?
