Why don't Imprezas hold their value very well?
Ok, so I knew when I bought my Impreza at a year old that I would lose a fortune on it. I plan on keeping it long term so it's value isn't really a big deal to me, but why don't they keep their value?
I know the current market is terrible for performance cars but Evos, Skylines, 350z, etc etc... hold their value. How come you can get an Impreza for peanuts these days?

Running costs simple as. People are tightening their belts now and nobody wants cars that do 20mpg and could potentially cost £400 a year for road tax.
On the other hand if you can afford it or you're just after a weekend car then there are some mega bargains to be had. Not just you Jap sports cars but your MB E55's and BMW M5's are a relative second hand steal.

1. Road tax increases.
2. Crap mpg coupled with high fuel costs.
3. Image.
4. Loads for sale.
5. Not everybody's cup of tea, including new version.
6. Other marques getting quicker?
7. Struggling in WRC (what launched them in the 1st place)
Can't think of more at the mo.

Yeah I reckon one of the main reasons is due to the market being flooded with Euro import Imprezas.
It's good for the buyer though.
I bought my '56-plate' hawkeye for about 12k. A UK car with only 8000miles on the clock, which brand new would have cost £20k. So although not good for the previous owner, meant I had a bargain

The car was probably sold to a fleet hire company for £15k - selling on at £11k is no loss at all I would suggest?
Cast your minds back to 1999 - a 1 Year Old Impreza was the price of a NEW Impreza! Due to the Import restrictions. This was the hayday of the WRX Jap Import ........ no need to buy a Jap Import anymore - but the sheds give the illusion of low prices.
The Impreza everyone wants is a genuine, standard, UK Impreza with 1 owner and excellent history ..... and those bring proper money and are worth every single penny IMO.
If you roll up to buy an Impreza and this fella greets you - RUN AWAY!! http://homepage.ntlworld.com/darkpowers/chav.jpg

It's all been said really. In the last 3 months, they have dropped BIG TIME. The tax and fuel costs have put many people off owning them. Cant afford to run them so put them up for sale, everyone has done it over the small period mentioned and theres lots of competition. People cant afford to keep them so they lower the price to sell it faster and others follow suit! It is a downwards spiral unfortunately! I bought mine 3 months ago and lost probably 3k?

All of the above factors, plus Gordon Browns robbing scheme with road tax. Pretty much anything thats thirsty on the fuel and attracts the higher road tax is going to be worth peanuts next year.
Omegas have horrendous depreciation as it is, I can see them being absolutely worthless next year with the road tax exceeding the cost of the car.

I got all the chav and drug dealer jibes of my pals when I first turned up in the Impreza... seems to be what people think of them now, rather than as a rally legend.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there... Ok, all brands are suffering in the current financial climate but Subaru have been suffering for a while now and thinking about it... it's the image. Every time a villian comes on a TV show they drive an Impreza lol

The more successful drug dealer will be driving a BMW X5 or Range Rover Sport (in black, with the windows blacked out of course !) Seems to be that way round here anyway !
