Default Advice - Bought car with no V5

Hi all, just bought a Golf gti mk1 which the owner couldnt find the V5, The car is genuin as i work with his brother..

Not sure what to do, he did have the old V5 present which had the owner previous to him on it but had lost the new one.

Is it me worth filling in the old one? or how do i get a new one/what do i need?

Cheers

If he still has the old v5 from the previous owner then surely he never sent off to have it registered in his name.
I guess yiou could either fill it in and date it from when you bought it.
The only other option would be to just apply for a new v5 for the car with a form from the post office,(think it costs about £10 to the DVLA, as i had to do this once before as i didnt receive the v5 for a car i bought).
The form would ask for the Chassis number and a few other minor details.

Any part of the V5 will get you a V5 in your name at your local VRO (now rebranded DVLA Local Office -the queues remain the same though-).

Either just fill in the one he has or apply for a new one,if you never received it it should be FOC.

You know it makes sense. This is the only option in my mind.

Not wanting to throw doubt on the person you bought it from, but I would apply for a new V5 rather than use the one from the owner before him. That way if there are any outstanding tickets/fines coming they wont be yours.
Not saying this is the case but never say never and if there is no record of they guy you bought it from having owned the car things could get messy.

Use the V5 available as it won't cost you anything or use this http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/forms/v62.pdf

Feel a bit bad if i fill in the old style V5 as ill have to fake the signiture of owner previous?, i can only asume that it is still present as it was the change over from the new style and didnt get thrown away- The car has been SORN for 1 year and a half so i dont think it will have any surprises.
