OK

The 2nd one is worth it - ignore the first.

Two technologies - GSM (SMS) & GPRS

With SMS you either send an SMS to the unit to "wake" it to send you back an SMS with position or it sends you an SMS based on various sensory inputs (door open, car moved from home etc) with position. To get "realtime" info, it is necessary to ring in to the unit & create an open data connection. Either PAYG or GSM subscription + SMS calls.

With GPRS it is an "always on" technology so that it sends back data based on a time period so that you always know where it is (within x period of time). As a guide, our couriers send back a GPS fix every 10 seconds and together with job details/status updates, equates to 3 or 4mb per month of data, which is within the £8 monthly tariff - I know there are cheaper rates.

So you will get data xfer charges of some description.

With #1 it will respond to a query - no good if the thief has used a radio or recording device to sense out the interference (device) at their leisure whilst you are unaware.
Whereas with #2 it is sending its position right up until the point the ****** finds it.

At the end of the day, both the mechanical devices are essentially mobile phones with GPS receivers that are likely to be as reliable as any other mobile phone (connection, provider, location), so they will work. It then remains as to how you will use the information you receive (our GPRS GPS database currently runs to 175 MILLION individual records received over the last 3 years ) to track your car. It can be anything from a googlemaps plotting to a fully integrated map solution allowing instantaneous automatic updates as to refreshes.

Oh - our couriers use XDA Orbit hand held PDAs with inbuilt GPS receiver - free with an O2 connection
