Bit confused as to why people seem to prefer the STi lights to the WRX.
They are practically identical from what I have seen.

The main difference for me is the front LSD. How easy is it to get one of these added to a WRX?

Oh and it's 25,500 in UK (or 27 with all the tacky styling bits)

1) can u afford it comfortably 'cos it'll be damned expensive to run?
2) can you afford insurance?
3) have u somewhere safe to park it?
4) I assume you've had a decent test drive?
5) Can u live with the in 'yer face looks?
If "yes, all the above" then go for it.
If not, think carefully, there's no need to rush.

If you can afford it go for it, just check your insurance, I checked mine today to move up to a new WRX from a MY99. They quoted me £1300 I only paid £780 last April

if i had a WRX, i would rather modify that then pay out what they're gonna want for the STi

you can probably get the same effect at 1/2 the cost

I'd be tempted to do it. Yes you can add a PPP to your std WRX and get close to STI power, but the gearing is longer, the brakes worse and you still wont have as good a handling package.

I'd eat my hat if there is not an official PPP within 4 months giving 300bhp. At the very least a new centre and backbox will release 15-20bhp giving a substantial performance advantage over a MY01 with PPP. In std form the UKSTI is 2 sec quicker to 100 than a PPP'd car.

I'm still tempted myself as I think it will give the smiles my UK300 PPP never did.

Same problem here! Mine would be p/x plus £6k. & with ppp package there is no real difference. So I spent 1600 notes on Leda - it has transformed the car.

Personally I found the sti buzzer, rev light & i/c water cooler somewhat gimmicky, though the wheels certainly looked better on 7.5........

My insurance would have only gone up by £260....for the year...

thanks but you haven't helped!

the sti does have something about it that drew me to it i am happy with my01 but it needs add on's i feel ppp etc ,(morrettes already done)
whereas the sti has it already as it stands (you seen them lights? nice)

with warranty a major reason for buying uk not import i wouldn't do any mods other than styling and ppp to the my01

CALLING ALL NEW STI OWNERS TELL ME, YAY OR NAY?
also is it a good deal, i thought they were 28k list?

oh and whats the prodrive uk sti got different and can i get one and how much?

quandries o plenty
damn!

I aint no owner Monk but been thinking the same thing all day.

So you need 7, well you can take the price of the PPP off that for a start, so call it 5 between friends. If you've already paid for the MY01 go for it

Sti Type UK - £25,995.00
Prodrive UK - £27,495.00

Lets face it the STI is a more desirable car in many ways...sure you can get a standard wrx to perform better by moding it but in the end you get a car that has a poor resale compared to the STI and you spend similar money. The STI is more sofisticated eg nice gear box (6 speed) and the list goes on.....I could probably mod some other car for far less than buying a STD wrx and still blow the wrxs doors off...but it would simply be a fast bucket of ****. The analogy works for the WRX vrs STI (except the WRX is nice) but it will never be an STI!!

STi is something special.
It is not a WRX with a lot of after market parts added later.
This is a stock car built by a group of Fuji Heavy Industry fanatics! To create an engine of the same quality in a WRX would be nigh on impossible and cost many thousands ££££.
Prices for the STi in Belgium etc. are not yet official but expect to save at least £3K on the UK prices. This may be more as the UK cars have the additional cost of Tracker + Alarm/Immobi.
As a stock car the STi is awesome. To upgrade all but the engine from a WRX would cost >£5k and remember that 6-speed box is probably one of the finest pieces of engineering to come out of FHI for a long time.
The dealers offer is good in as much as it looks like he's giving you too good a price for your WRX (the max he should give you would be list less VAT) but this begs the question HOW MUCH FAT do UK dealers have in the STi???

Mark, it is £25,995 and £27,495 for the normal and Prodrive style respectively - where did you get your figures from?

As for the lights... well the UK WRX has two separate reflectors, top one for indicator and bottom for headlights. Both are silvered. The STi has 3 parts, with black plastic separating them - outside bottom is the indicator, next to that is the HID projector and above that is the headlight. Compare photos directly and the difference is enormous. And seeing the STi in the flesh (two Prodrive Style WR Blue ones at Anthony Betts this morning) made it obvious how much nicer the lights are.

The STi differences over the WRX are amazing - 6 speed, alcantara, upside down suspension struts, HID lights etc. Considering you'd need to mod your WRX's lights and add PPP to get close, yet your wouldn't get the brakes, suspension etc, I think the STi is bloody good value out of the box.

Second that (as above).
LSD too plus tougher internals etc. etc.
If you want to turn a UK WRX into a type-UK STi-7 then I hope you have a spare £25-30K lying around. It would cost at least this much! I'm def up for one but I still have MY00 and I'm not too greedy as to throw in all my hard earned. Besides the waiting/anticipation is half the fun. What's to look forward too if you have everything you want! Besides STi-8 wil prob be better still :-)

FYI P1Fan attic, I do not partake in the weed.
Would you like to work out the price of the following over std WRX.
The sam spec does not mean same torque and power curve it means same std period.
Wheels (7.5 not 7) + tyres
Brakes (disks, bells, pads etc.)
Gearbox £££££££
Clutch
Lights
LSD
Suspension (invert + dampers + springs + etc.)
Seats (not just diff colour!)
Intercooler
Turbo
Hoses etc.
ECU
Exhaust
Engine (80% different)
If you're going to post facecious replies to people you don't know at least get your facts right m8!

Why would u want to get a WRX using 'exactly' the same parts as the STi? The whole idea was to save money by buying a cheaper WRX and modding it up to STi levels - not swapping every part to what the STi has and hand building yourself a damn replica.

Does the phrase
"there's no substitute for the real thing"
mean anything to you?

You misunderstand. A 'damn replica' is not the idea. No amount of tinkering will make a normal WRX 5sp box behave like the new STi 6-sp. New Brembo brakes all round to match the stopping power, fade, response, pedal feel etc.
What I am trying to get at is the measure of a car versus another is far from matching dynos, 0-60, 60-0, 0-100 and appearence.
I'm certain that for a modest outlay for a WRX import (£16250 at today's exchange rate) and some fettling from Pete C & friends (for about £6k or so) will spawn a fantastic car which may well rival an STi in many respects but the fact remains, it ain't ever gonna be the real thing.
