Default are the wrx sti type uk expensive to maintain/fix

as im looking at buying a wrx sti type uk but have zero experience with these cars as i have been a ford man all my life,

so im looking to learn all the good points and bad about these cars

i wont be uprating the power so im hoping the standard engines are reliable and the gearbox/diffs can take some spirited driving??? but what if the worst happens!!!

what power can the engine/transmission/clutch take happily all day long?
can they be launched hard without box letting go every time?
are they easy to work on?
are parts expensive?
what breaks or needs replacing often?
what does a full service cost if done at dealers

etc etc etc

all info appreciated as id hate to buy the car and love it but not realise they cost 10k a year to run/maintain/fix

thanks
marc

Marc,

How Old are you looking at/ what millage?

what power can the engine/transmission/clutch take happily all day long? 340-360 average 100-150K there strong but not bullet proof. (although 2.0ltr engine internals can cope with upto 420bhp) 420bhp done correctly last much longer than 350bhp done poorly .

Clutch can last 50K or 50mins your left and right foot will decide that

can they be launched hard without box letting go every time?
How many times, Diff oil changed ?

are they easy to work on?
Awkward but not that bad

are parts expensive?
Very expensive from dealer, elsewhere just expensive or cheap relatively,

cheap parts don't last long if given loads of stick

what does a full service cost if done at dealers
Depends on which one (intermediate,1,2,3 or 4th years) IIRC at dealer(dpends on which dealer) range £170 to £660 Scoob specialists £130 to £550

Slight guide to prices and VERY rough

Engine rebuilds £3.5K
Gearbox £2K
Clutch kit, Flywheel and fitted @dealer (6speed) £1650 @specailist (6speed) £1350
Tyres £480-750
F/Brake £180 (dealers £250)
F/Disks £300 (dealers £500)
Rear Brake £100

Abuse and poor maintenance is the biggest killer of scoobs. Trackdays (circa 150-200m) each track mile times by 50 so intermediate before and after. DCCD Diff oil always after aswell.

I've had 4 scoobs in 8 years and given then all a good airing my usage is quite high on consumables due to spirited driving and trackdays

Tyres last 5kmiles
Clutch 13Kmiles
Front Brake Pads 4Kmiles
Rear Brake Pads 12Kmiles
Discs 18kmiles

IMHO IIRC AFAICR

Tony

Yes those are standard Parts and if your giving it some holy joyfull will need to upgrade Parts.

BTW Performance and Specification wise, better to get a JDM "Spec C" or JDM STI than a UK STi.

JDM's are in a better starting place for Performance and Spec C's are lighter

IMHO IIRC
