On the classic, pre-98 have a flat bonnet and colour coded side vents. 98-01 have a bonnet thats raised in the middle and black side vents.

WRONG!

93-96 cars had the flat bonnet that diveted a little downwards in the middle. they also had the rounder lights and grille.

96-98 cars then had the squarer headlights and grille along with the new bonnet/vent shape.

the facelifted cars are sometimes referred to as either 96-00 or 98-00 cars as in 98-00 the cars recieved the updated front bumper. so basically 96-98 cars had a mixure of both whereas the 93-96 and 98-00 cars were pretty much totally different...
example of a typical 93-96 car...

example of a 96-98 car....

example of a 98-00 car (mine actually)...

notice the differences between all three

Dash was facelifted on 98-00 cars (I think it was 98 anyway!). The facelifted dash had the heater controls higher up and set out differently and had the centre bin on top with the lift up lid which can often be found to house 3 gauges... like mine

Mine's also the identity crisis one (MY98).
