Checking Engine Oil?
Do you check the engine oil when its warm or cold? I really should know this!

When it's cold and had chance to drain back into the sump.

Cold.
As it has all settled at the bottom and you get a true reading.
Upper dot is Full.

I agree - cold. Although that is a bit difficult to reconcile with the advice in the manual, that the oil be checked 'every time you fill up with petrol'. When on earth is your engine going to be cold in those circumstances? I've always wondered about that.

i would say warm . run it for 10 mins then leave it for 10 for the oil to settle into the sump

best to have 5litres at home and check/add before starting up inthe morning
