Question

I am currently enquiring about a 1999 STI Type R, which is up for sale.
I have asked the guy for the VIN number = GC8****** I went to www.sidc.co.uk to check the Jap car manufacture runs and none seem to match? "GC8" part of the number is o.k but the following six numbers (****** above) didn't match as the VIN numbers on SIDC have letters as well as numbers following the "GC8" section of the number & all the numbers seem to have less characters??
Am I just being thick or is there something else to it?

Any help appreciated

The numbers on the SIDC web site are not the VIN number, but the model build code. This can be read from the ID plate mounted near the passenger side suspension turret.

As each VIN number will be different, a list of these would go on for hundreds of pages, but the model codes cover a all the cars built to the same spec (e.g. STi III RA 4 door).
