Default Moving off on a cold start??

So opinions please? Personally, I always wait for my engine to warm up at least 3 or 4 mins before I move off.

Heard some people saying they never go over 3000rpm, but I do that even when the engine IS warm (just economical driving)

Do you always warm up? Or move off as soon as she fires up?

I start it, leave it a couple of minutes then drive below sort of 2-2.5k for about 10 min until water temp is ok then drive it normal (try to keep below 3-3.5k) unless overtaking etc- Only due to the cost of V-Power haha

Bare in mind that if you leave your engine idling from cold, it may well warm up. But all the fluids in the transmission etc won't have warmed up.

Personally, start it, and within 30sec drive off, keeping off boost and below 2500rpm until the oil temp is at at least 80c.

Long time! Depending on the weather and traffic anything from 10-15min. If in traffic it tends to warm up quicker as no air is coming in. But some days when the roads are empty, I can travel a good 8 miles without it being fully up to temperature. Great thing to have an oil gauge, you will then truly know when you can boot it !

I drive it 17 miles to work but never really go above 3.5k all journey if I can help it but as I said for first sort of 10 min its off boost and below 2-2.5k. I bet some people just start their cars up jump in them, abuse them to the rev limit, arrive at their destination and then just casually switch the engine off without giving it time to cool!

O I've seen plenty of people do that, and they wonder why their turbos fail, or they melt something. Don't get me wrong, if the car is up to temperature, then by all means boot it, but I'd never boot it in any car unless it was well up to temperature.

Hey, I start the car and get it rolling straight away and I dont cool it down. I just switch the ignition off, take the key out, lock the door and thats that. Silly question but how do you guys cool your car down? Wouldn't it cool down if you just switched the ignition off and took the key out - is there some "special" way of doing it?

I only travel approx 3 miles to work (10-15 min drive) and only sometimes does the temperature reach the half-way mark.

Please help! Dont want my turbo blowing.

Good advice guys. The temp guage in my classic (only has one) says the temperature is upto normal running temps after about a mile or 2 (guess this only coolant temperature). My friend who has the same is happy to boot his at this point, but I'm more cautious.

I tend to do as you guys, below 3k rpm for 10 mins or so before releasing the horses, and even before then I would just tickle the turbo so that gets spinning a little before full boost!

I move off straight away, but tend to stay off the revs for 5-10 minutes. On the other side I'll only let it cool down if I've given it a thrashing, but usually just slow down my driving and keep to low revs for 5-10 mins before I arrive at my destination.

i leave mine running for ten minutes before i get in, then i take it easy(below 3000rpm)for 10-15 minutes, then she is warmed up nicely and ready for action!

I also stay off boost and below 3000 rpm for the last 2 0r 3 miles home, and she gets 2 minutes to tick over before she goes to sleep!

Care for your scoob and it will care for you!

Jesus... you don't need to molly-coddle it too much if its near-standard....

Its common sense not to rag it silly as soon as you pull away, but I thought only 17yo's in their first 1.0 car drove like that - ***** to all this leaving it sitting to warm up crap - I'm as protective over my car as the next, but thats just silliness. Its a road car.. not an F1 car.

Got to agree with that mate, as for the lad who leaves it 10 mins on the drive?? god help you if you have neighbours still in bed and full de-catted system...I bet they love that!

I start the thing, by tyhe time the gates have been opened and ive moved the worksvan, then its warm enough to move off, and yeah, then just keep off boost until oil temp is at least half on the guage (next to speedo...not pod)

unlock gate
unlock car
disclok off
start engine
drive 5 metres to edge of road

Wheelspin out of my drive at 5000rpm and fishtail up the street,

keeps my engine as sweet as a nut

Those of you who manage to keep below 3000 rpm - or even 2500 rpm - do you have UK models or imports?

Within a couple of miles of home I'm on a dual carriageway where 70mph is over 3500 rpm in 5th in my STI - and the Type-R is even worse

Remind me to never buy a car off you

10mins is too long for me to be waiting around though, I couldn't be waiting that long!! I always leave it two mins to cool down even if I have taken it easy all journey. Good drills!

I start off on 30/40 roads then only hit 60mph roads for first 12 miles, its not until the 12mile point I get a dual carriageway! Its good having 6 gears, that drops the revs a little

Does anyone actually know how to cool the car down since no-one has been of help to me yet!?

Do I simply turn ignition off and take key out after pulling up, or do I turn the key back to position 1 etc, then leave for 2 mins before taking it out?

IMHO it's more important to avoid loading the engine than worry about revs too much.
You could be at 2k but be in the wrong gear and therefore loading the engine more than being in a lower gear at 4k with a small throttle opening.

every body has different opinions on this!!

i personally always get in start car fits stereo an sort myself out seat belt etc then ill pull straight off the drive an will keep under 3000 till water temp is up, then under 4000 till oil temp is up.

an i have had a rebuild due to oil consumption but could be due to last owner although was only built 5 months before i bought anyway my mate when he had his (for 2 years) never had no problems an he ragged it everyday from start to finish but he did let it cool before switching off

now im a mechanic an feel letting a car tick over will glaze the bores so therefor i dont allow it to to much ill rather cool down on way home then 30 seconds when im there as if ticking over to long temps rise not fall

just all in my opinion though

When you have finished your journey.................I read in the manual that you are supposed to let it tick over for 5 min, pour cold water on it, spray intercooler then finally place 14 ice cubes through the bonnet vent. Can anyone confirm this is true?
