Default How to tell its a 2.5

Looking at buying a Scoob with 2.5 conversion, How do I tell its so just by looking at the engine in situ, Will it have a code no. stamped on bottom cases somewhere or is there a quick way to identify just by looking, Don't won't to pay for a 2.0 thats just had the wick turned up
Cheers for any info
Dave

why? a 2.0 is probably more reliable than a 2.5 anyway

Theres a stamp on the top of the engine block, if you look down the left side of the alternator it should say EJ25. Or EJ20 for a 2.0lt.

In the main this statement is correct, however, there are quite a lot of ej20's that have been converted to 2.5l

You can take an EJ20 block and have the liners machined out then replaced with new 100mm bore liners, to create a 2.5. Usually only ever done on a closed deck block and if someone has gone to that much trouble the car will more than likely have some serious modifications.

I've modified the following pic to indicate where you can find "EJ25" cast into the block at the front of the engine (visible between the alternator and power steering pump) If it's an EJ257 based conversion the block will have an additional breather as well towards the middle and back. This will more than likely be blacked off in some way on a classic Impreza 2.5 conversion.
