Will my car at present my03 wrx with 257bhp and 275lbs/ft beat any hot hatch? On a dual carrageway in the dry.

My Fabia vRS is running 312 lb/ft of torque, so on a D/C in the dry where your 4WD system is of no benefit and is actually sapping performance through drivetrain losses, I'd give you a run for your money up to about 120mph. Throw in complex twisties and/or a slippery surface and the ball swings back in your favour due to your superior grip and traction.

I'm not insecure. Never thought a fabia would cause me a problem. Thanks mate I'll have to watch out for them in the future. Is that the diesel?

It is but there are times when I do it too. Driving to work along an a road. In front of me was a skyline(with an exhaust diameter of half a foot). Behind me was a porsche boxster. I'd say we were pretty much equal but it was a laugh. Of course we never went faster than 70mph.

Went on the a12 today and a vrs was in front of me. He moved over and put his foot down, I went past him. He was trying and smiled as I went past. Quite fast little cars though.

Why can't people understand that it's torque that accelerates vehicles.... and probably receive an ***-whuppin' from the re-mapped Vrs brigade too.
Mate James has the Ibiza TDi and it's 225bhp BUT 350 lb.ft. of torque.
In the dry it canes my 340-ish STI from a rolling start, different in the damp tho'.

Doubt you'll struggle against any hot hatches (unless they're modded).

Question

Ah, that's why F1 cars are so slow with only 200ft-lb of torque..

Here's me thinking it was down to the 750 odd BHP..

BTW, how much of the power band do these performance diesels produce >300ft-lb..?

Opinions are like @r$£holes, everyone has one, and most are a bit $h!tty

My diesel Skoda has raised a few eyebrows on track. In the dry standard and mildly mod'd Scoobs aren't too much to bother me. When it's wet I concede to their much better traction. Your 370/405 would have me beat well and truly, as long as you can drive

bhp is an equation worked out using torque and revs cant remember what it was exactly but the higher the revs when you make your peak torque the more bhp, thats why the honda vtec is so good
found it bhp=

torque(ft lbs) x engine revs(rpm)
-------------------------------
5252(constant)

A well driven Clio 182 will give you a run for your money

Torque turns wheels
Horsepower turns heads

i think i read somewhere that horse power back in the day was the idea of an average horse being able to lift 33 pounds 100 feet, or 330 pounds 10 feet or any other equation working out the same, think i read that on how stuff works a while ago for college. correct me if im wrong.

It won't.

A mate of mine at work had a 182, and on the way home one night we had a bit of a play on a dual carriage way. I'm only running 250bhp and left him standing (not from a standstill - rolling start).

A 182 may, if it's lucky, beat a bog standard WRX, but never anything modded (wet or dry).
