ROAD TEST FOR MOT???
Got my Scoob MOT'd this morning (flew through - ready for selling this month...) The tester said he needed to take it for a test drive to check the diff/ brakes as it is AWD and so they could not test it in the garage as they did not have the facilities.
I ain't too fussed one way or the other as I know the guys well and I said to the guy to open it up anyway if he fancied. Notwithstanding, I know a few guys on here would be having kittens at the thought of soomeone else driving their car.
Your thoughts gents....

using a tapley meter to test the brakes on the road is normal practice for AWD cars. 4wd brake testing rollers are expensive by no means widespread.

Stephen, you should have been insisting that they used a Tapley meter! You dont really need to drive on the road though, across the car park is usually more than enough.

Got mine MOT'd this morning and they used the strange old meter in the footwell to test the brakes - only took it across the car park a couple of times though, once for the foot brake and once for the hand brake. It wasn't nice watching my baby come to a stop with the back wheels locked up though....

if facilities not available a test drive can be done with the meter. Really very minimum reading required. And then a test of hand brake requires even smaller reading. Really would only fail if something really wrong. And also be aware that it does not pick up on out of balance brakes!

I got caught out one year with the MOT coming around quicker than I thought and ended up going to one garage who wanted to put the car on the 2wd brake rollers. When I told them they couldn't as it was an AWD car, then replied, "why does that matter" Scary!
Needless to say, I said cheerio right then and there.

Surely if the center diff got 'wound up', the rollers would drag the car off the rollers like a locked center diff would?
I thought the center diff was a viscous thing and surely would hardly get warm at the slow speed/duration of the test? and no damage would be done?
A reply from a gearbox/diff builder would be handy, API?
