Import vs uk spec, what scooby shall i get
Hi to all scooby net users. i am a noobie. i am searching for a scooby to buy as my BMW 328ci is just crap and boring. i have always been into japs cars and i just need a bit of help buying the perfect scooby for myself. i have approx £6000 to spend, i dont want an sti due to insurance purposes. unless i can get a cheap quote. i have seen on autoadvan.com which is an import car website. i just wanted to know wheather it was worth going down that route. Any advice will appreciated. thanks

If you're after all the spec differences, I can recommend the Haynes book "You and your Subaru Impreza Turbo", which gives all the detailed technical data for the classic (pre-2001) Impreza as well as a comprehensive run-down of the model's history.
Also well worth a look are Main Page - ScoobyPedia and Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | SidcFaq / SIDC FAQ
Most of the regular household names in insurance are, in my experience, pricey or clueless when it comes to imports that don't have equivalent UK models - check out the insurance forum for the specialists that many of us use instead. You may be pleasantly surprised.
As for which car to pick - do your homework, then drive a few. The differences between UK (Turbo 2000), WRX and STI are pretty obvious once you get behind the wheel, you shouldn't have too much trouble deciding which it is you fancy.
Be warned that there are a lot of totally shagged old nails out there by now, and you really can't afford to buy a duff car, whatever the spec. Be picky and buy on condition, not age or spec.

Check Cheap Car Insurance :: Keith Michaels for insurance - very good prices and service.
You get a few more electrical goodies with JDM models (A/C, folding mirrors, etc.) and, most importantly, more power and performance.
If you wanna spend money modifying the engine, go for an STi as the engine's built differently to the others.
I've got a MY99 WRX which is a face-lift model with a nicer interior than the older ones.
Here's another good site for spec: Impreza WRX Online Catalog - Contents

Thanks for the replies. my next dilema is getting my hands on a JDM. the JDM car already imported have the dealers mark up already so im not really going to get a bargain from them.

If you dont want expensive insurance then an import is out the window all together. Buy a UK tubo 2000, great value for money, and can easily be modded to make the same power as a standard Sti import....although that would probs more than use up the money saved from the cheaper insurance . Its up to u at the end of the day. Turbo 2000's are a bargain
also i have been seeing terzo like in ur name. whilst hunting for insurance. please can somebody tell me about what terzo is!
thanks again for all the help

OK, confusion clear-up time
For the classic shape, sold up until late '00, the only turbocharged Impreza normally sold was badged as the Turbo 2000 - a name which people don't actually use much, referring to it instead as the 'UK spec' or 'European' car. Rated at 208 or 215 bhp depending on year.
There were various special editions based on this car: the Series McRae ('96), Terzo ('98), RB5 ('99), all of which are mechanically very similar, but came in different colours and with various (relatively minor, IMHO) changes from the standard car.
PPP was optional on all of these, giving a louder exhaust note and about 35 bhp extra. The Prodrive branded exhaust back-box is a good clue that it's fitted, but the only actual proof is the certificate issued by Prodrive. Only Prodrive themselves ever actually fitted the PPP kit to the classic Impreza, cars had to be sent there specially.
The closest equivalent model in Japan was badged WRX, starting out at 240 bhp, then 260, then finally 280 in the latest models. Neither official Subaru dealers nor Prodrive ever produced tuning parts for these - WRC programme excepted! - though lots of other people did. So if someone tries to sell you a classic shape WRX with PPP, they're either confused or lying.
Then there's the WRX STI, or just plain STI for short. Early ones of these started life as WRX's off the production line and were modified by STI, whilst later ones were built alongside the WRX at the factory. Like the WRX these were never sold officially in the UK (except as the limited edition P1).

Hi
Personally with your sort of budget I would go with one of the limited edition uk models and keep a little back for your own choice of mods Just my opinion though
