How to search on the BBS - RIGHT NOW.....maybe
#2
OK, I've sussed whats going on, and I've been ever so slightly had!
When Google says they will search the site your on, what they really mean is that they will search for the words you enter in THEIR OWN database (which is created by standard web spidering), but limit the results only to those matches in their database that are for the site you are currently on.
So, your limited to whatever Google have already found out from the spidering the site you are on.
Google have obviously spidered (some of?) Scoobynet in the past which is why I picked up a few matches on some keywords.
I couldn't really understand how they were going to spider the whole of Scoobynet in a few seconds just to get me real time search results. Oh well, taken in by the marketing people again. Doh.
Still, the Google toolbar still looks a useful IE extension
Duffel coat well and truly buttoned up.
Bye

Bear in mind that in some circumstances the Google toolbar will send to Google information about all the sites you visit. This is well flagged during the set-up and you can disable it by disabling one of the features (which you probly wouldn't want anyway).

One idea I had sometime ago was to setup a web page that had links to all topics on scoobynet. Ok, it would be a big web page but it could be autogenerated using something like perl. Then once you've generated such a page, you could then tell google to do it's spidering on your page. This would hopefully bring the whole of scoobynet into the google database and then google could be the scoobynet search engine.
One drawback that I can see is that the search would only cover everything posted to the time when google last did its spidering.
