I would say the hydraulic piston is squeaking ..... have the same on my MX5. (but I'm not sure whether the Impreza operates the same way?)

Mine started sticking down.........just before it ripped the bearing out of the pressure plate. Worth checking the master cylinder first as it's cheaper and easier to replace.

A bit squeeky is not a problem as mine has squeeked for over 2 years on and off. Think its just a bit sticky somtimes.

When my clutch 1st stuck down though it turned into a problem. My car would start to bite and pull at any given spot when releasing the clutch pedal. turned out to be a new clutch needed. I'll note that it did not do this on every occasion.

My clutch pedal squeeked as soon as i got it. A big squirt of WD40 from the mechanic in the dealers around the pedal and it went, never to return.

I thought a sign of the clutch going was the change of travel when the clutch bites.
